Also, if you are on anyone elses dime on Wifi, it is free....
You finally get to my point. I know I'm being pedantic, but it is not free, because some poor sod is paying for that wifi connection. That is the point I have, obviously clumsily, been trying to make. As you say "anyone elses dime". Anyone elses dime does not equate to free. I guess it depends on where in the system you are standing.... I give up.....
Reading through this thread, I see a lot of confusion. I only read through Page 1 so I'm not sure if you got a straight answer or not.
FaceTime (video calling) over Wi-Fi does not count against your plan.
iMessage over Wi-Fi does not count against your plan.
It is also possible to FaceTime (on some carriers) or iMessage over cellular, but these would count against your data plan (but do not count against your text or phone plan).
Phone calls count against your voice plan.
SMS messages count against your text plan.
Well, I can't argue with you there, tonefox! I also have an issue with "I want everything to be done for me by my smart devices, and when something goes wrong, I do not want to take any personal responsibility for it even if I neglected to do my due diligence....and by the way, I want it right now!!!!"
So, I hear ya! 😝
Cheers,

Adding little smiley faces doesn't make your posts any less insulting. Since you can't seem to engage in civil discourse, I will leave you to your own devices.
Is that last part a pun, Meg? Or a double entendre? I think it's a scream, intentional or not! 😁

No need to give up tonefox. I see your point. I think stevejobsfan has the correct statement all around. Makes my point without the "free" part, resulting in not refuting your point. As an English major, I should have caught on to your point sooner rather than later. I, too, am usually a stickler for accurate terminology, so you are correct.....it's not free.....shall we say it is free-ish?
Cheers,

That's sort of up to your chosen provider. They're all on the web.
Imessage works on wifi or cellular.
Yes, but because he doesnt have any wireless service cellular connection wouldnt help.
what wouldn't help? wireless service is not required for imessage, once it has been activated on your phone. you can send/receive imessages usnig your appleid email.
What I am trying to explain is that because he does not have wireless service he would not be able to use cellular connection. That is why I only mentioned he would want to use wifi connection.
why cant you send email/imessage over wifi? basically you're using the iphone as an ipod touch..nothing wrong in that.
I'm lost. Are you suggesting that a wifi connection is essential to enable a cellular connection? The phone is inert if out of range of somebody's router?
no i am not suggesting anything like that.
yes the phone is connectionless if its' out of wifi coverage, that is obvious; just like its connectionless when out of cellular coverage.
Everything has a price. Either the coffee you buy at the store, or food you buy at Wendy's.
ok, capt. obivous... whats your point?
