Try this:

Make sure IOS is updated to latest version

(How to update your iOS device

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623)

Reboot device by pressing both the home button and sleep/wake (power) buttons at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.

If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings (or for network connection issues 'reset network settings').

(no media or data will be deleted from the device, this will only take a minute).

Again... how's he going to go to any of that when the touchscreen is dead?

My response adds value by eliminating that same copy/paste canned answers when clearly the question wasn't read.

How's your brain working when it's overwhelmingly obvious you missed the part about the TOUCHSCREEN not working...

Again, good advice Dr. Canned Answer... Home button and Power, sure... short of the buttons being broken as well, that might help...

The "if that doesn't work" part was clearly the rest of the waste when he can't get there...

This sums up your advice for fixing the touchscreen when the touchscreen is broken...

Here's another, somewhat surprising, remedy: Turn VoiceOver (VO) on and off, perhaps using it a little in between.

The rest of the story: I had this problem recently (Original mini, 7.0.6). GrumpyGator's and reedster's procedures worked (Hold Wake/Sleep and Home until Apple logo comes and goes, then boot after 25 seocnds) -- the first time. A few days later, the problem recurred and the procedure only get me to the point where I could slide to unlock and make 1 or 2 sucessful touches, with no response thereafter. Siri usage showed that the device was alive, just not touch-accessible. I wanted to check something before doing a reset, but could not find the words to "convince" Siri to do it. It occurred to me to try VO, as an alternate control interface (though it typically requires touch). I told Siri to turn VO on. I discovered that I did not get the desired voice control, but (Yay!) I suddenly had a live touchscreen, so could execute all iPad functionality using swipe, tap and double-tap. I made my checks, using VO, then crossed my fingers and turned VO off. Double- or Triple-Yay! My touchscreen now seems to be fully functional!

Note that VO is very chatty. So seek seclusion, turn the volume down or connect a wired or A2DP BT headset if you try this, lest you annoy everyone within ear shot.

I had to put the device in recovery to do the restore from iTunes:

  • Bring up iTunes
  • Hard reset to Mini-holding down home and power buttons
  • Plug Mini into Computer
  • Continue holding down home and power button until you see the cord and the iTunes Logo on screen
  • You then can restore from iTunes without have to touch the screen to trust computer

Perfect solution to my problem with my wife’s iPad after updating to IOS 9.2 and experiencing a touch screen freeze

Can’t figure what Grumpy’s problem really is.

I/ve been a Mac user since we only had 400K floppies and a Systems disk. Long before there was a System 7 let alone 10or MultiFinder

Holding down the two buttons for 10+ seconds did the trick

Thanks.
