iPad vs. Windows laptop

I'm about to be a junior in high school in the fall and my laptops LCD screen has cracked. I'm debating on a new hP laptop or an iPad mini. I'd be using it alot for typing essays and such so I would be buying a keyboard for it. To me it seems pointless to buy another laptop that's only going to serve a year or two versus an iPad that can be used more extensively.

While most the an iOS device these days can be used on-its-own, connecting a device to a computer is important for certain tasks. Are you saying if you buy an iPad, then you won't have access to your own computer (even a family one where you can create your own account on it)?

I'm a teacher, devices are nice, but for academic work, you should also have a laptop as a lot of the work done is best done on a computer. Macbook Air or Macbook Pro are the best.

I have seen differences between OpenOffice(which is supposed to be very compatible with MS Office) and MS Office documents.

If your teachers want "MS Office" docuemnts today, stick with something that will make those.

Same situation going to college ... many people ask "will <this model> work?", but the department they will study in has a bias in favor of MS-only software.

That's the thing, in my home everyone has a laptop. My older brother and my 8 year old sister. We also have a iMac as well, so if need be, I'd have a computer to use to edit my documents to be in Microsoft form. At the moment I usually type them on my iPod or my iPhone and then edit them on a computer to be in word form
