Firefox + Dashboard = erratic cursor movement

Hi all, hoping someone can help with this as I've searched the net and haven't been able to find a solution as of yet. I'm running the latest version of Firefox on OS X 10.4.6 and an Intel mini, and the problem I'm having is when Firefox is running, if I open up dashboard and try to move the mouse a certain ways down the screen or the right, it will automatically snap up to the top left corner of the screen. This happens if Firefox is minimized to the dock as well. If I quit Firefox and open Safari or Camino the behavior stops. It's like there is an invisible perimeter about 2/3rds down and to the right of the screen that the cursor can't get past without the cursor jumping to the top left. I'm using extensions like adblock plus, all in one gestures, and gmail notifier. I have tried reinstalling Firefox and it's done the same thing. Something else I noticed is that if Firefox is opened in the background and dashboard is up, I can put my mouse over text and links and the cursor will change to match it, so it's like the dark gray in area in dashboard is not on top of the Firefox window somehow. If I have a Safari window open I can't mouse over web pages or text because Dashboard actually stays on top of the windows like I'm assuming it should. Anyways, I hope that made sense and thanks for any suggestions!

also, just found this out, it only happens if firefox is the active window, it can be running and if another app is active and dashboard is up the mouse doesn't jump...

Hi Aaryn, Welcome to Apple Discussions.

I don't have an Intel Mac to test it on but create a new account, name it "test" and see how your mouse function works in that User acct. (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.

Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.

Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

macjack, thanks for your response, I didn't think of trying that out. I created the test account in OS X and with Firefox open and as the active Window, I was still able to hover over links and the cursor would change while dashboard was on top of it however the problems with the cursor jumping went away. So it seems that it is limited to my user account. I went back to the affected account and tried making a new profile in Firefox, but that resulted in the same behavior as well. I also have already trashed and reinstalled Firefox. Is there some way I can maybe reinstall dashboard on my account? I've checked my login items to see if there is some program there that could be causing problems but there is nothing I could find. Thanks again for any suggestions you might have

That appears to be either normal behavior or a bug in FF because my mouse pointer changes to a finger when I hover over links also, however you can't click through to open the link.

The fact that it works as expected in a new user is good news. It menas the issue is limited to your user.

Log back into your normal user account:

Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder. It is actually pretty quick to check all. My guess would be prefs.

1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/ Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)

2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
• Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/ Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the " com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)

3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
• Navigate to YourHome/Library.
• Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
• Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
• Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
• Click on "apply to all"
• If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.

Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.

4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/ Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

Let us know.

Hey again

It looks like the problem went away when I dragged away the Preferences folder in my home/library directory. So I replaced the Preferences folder because it basically reset everything with dashboard and the account, I tried taking out just the Firefox and Dashboard components, but it is doing the same thing. I guess I have to try to isolate which preferences file is causing this now. The other little problem that came up is after trying the fonts folder, and replacing it after it didn't work some of the fonts are missing now. Example on the stickies in Dashboard they are no longer in the Marker Felt font. I used spotlight to find the font and install it again and its ok now but some of the other widgets look a bit off. Is there any way to rebuild all the fonts as they were in default installation? I only moved the whole fonts folder like in your instructions and replaced it but for some reason some of the fonts are not there it looks like. But I think this is pretty much coming to a resolution now, just have to find that preference file. Thanks again

Actually ignore the part about fonts there, I was able to fix that by copying the fonts folder from the system/library folder. Now all thats left is to track down that preferences file. I think I should be ok to go on from here on my own. I will try a few different ones and get it tracked down. Thanks again for getting me onto the right path 🙂
