Upgrade iPad iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 6

My iPad is the original first generation. The OS is iOS 5.1.1. How can I get it upgraded to iOS 6?

The Arc and Meek123 I agree with you 100%. All of us were early adopters who spent hundreds on a product that Apple does not support for more than a few years. And for others who say that it is not obsolete, they should try running a slew of current apps on the iPad 1 - they don't work. Time to do some comparison shopping. Fool me once .......

Apple needs to ensure that the app developer base builds or updates their apps keeping all versions of the iPad/iPhone or at the very least support all minimum versions of iOS that's available to its customer base like iOS 5.1.1. We all understand hardware restrictions and processing speed but if a product is still being supported it should be supported fully especially since we all paid for these apps. I personally don't care if the free ones don't work. Apple is doing a great job maintaining the Apple apps (Pages/Numbers) to be compatible with the original iPad why not influence the developer base to meet that same standard before the updates are made available to the public?

COMPLETELY agree...

My girlfriend got an ipad 1 just before the ipad 2 came out... 2 years later, software support was discountinued.

Can she still use it? well... technically yes, but there are increasing bugs and security issues, and there's no access to updates as apps start to only support newer versions, OR the newer versions of apps are buggy on the older IOS.

I personally believe that the older ipad could completely run the os with minor modifications. It's not a "different" os, it just has a few new features.

make it easy and just don't compile these features for older code, and give app devs the hooks to check and see if these features are enabled.

but apple instead chose to make ipad 1 purchasers from 2010 feel like suckers. And we now lose faith in them (for the first time!!!)

I'm beginning to see the issue of "outdated hardware" with the release of iOS 7. Many users are stating here on the forums (of course, not everyone) that their older, less capable devices like the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 (minimum hardware for iOS 7) are having trouble keeping up with the demands of iOS 7. This is inevitable and I feel for those in this situation. As it stands today, I myself am not updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 7 for this very reason (I don't feel like jeopardizing my fully working device to test it and see). Hopefully, the older versions of apps compatible with older iOS versions will be more readily available (this is supposedly happening) and the user's of older hardware will be able to continue using their devices for a greater period of time.

I bought my iPad 1 when iPad 2 came out as it was a good price for the storage, which means I've only had it for 2.5 years. I expected it to last longer!

Safari and App Store is constantly crashing. I've closed any unclosed apps, I've rebooted, I've cleared history and cookies - still crashes.

We pay a lot of money for these products, I bought mine to replace my Windows laptop which I now have to use if want to look at any web page with a lot of photos as that seems to be a trigger. The laptop is FOUR years old! Now I'm stuck with an expensive iPad which I can't afford to replace which doesn't do what I bought it for anymore.

To get it to an Apple store I have to drive 30 miles, I dont want to do that if I'm going to get there and they say "can't do anything about that I'm afraid"!.

Not good enough.

Try taking an old IBM 386 and installing Windows 8 on it. As software becomes more advanced and more powerful it needs more powerful hardware to run it. I have used Apple for over 30 years now, and have many issues with them, but this is silly. What you seem to want is Apple not to innovate new and advanced software/Operating Systems so your old hardware can work. That's nonsensical.

This response is to all who think they are intelligent by posting dumb comparisons. The problem we "customers" are facing is, that the devices we paid a ton of money for and that works great at the most basic level needs to be thrown out the window because the apps designed for the so called amazing iPad experience no longer work. These are apps that people like me paid good money for. No one is asking Apple to stop innovating or asking Apple to replace our iPad1 with the latest and greatest device on the market. What we are asking for is continued app support for a minimum of 6 to 8 years of all apps that were made available to the original iPad. I sees that some of the app developers are using a means of recognizing the iPad OS / Hardware version before attempting to install the iOS7 version of the app. Big oven is an example of this process where they say that they recognize that the version I have is old and here is a version we have for with updates that you can install which supports your iPad version. We (the owners of the original iPad) are asking that we get continued support of the apps we have installed, in the fashion that Big Oven is supporting their app across all iPad models . It's unfortunate to see a genuine conversation get dragged into nonsense .

Also we update our apps just like anyone else to receive fixes to bugs and possible security updates, so the statement that anyone is at fault for updating their apps that cause the apps to crash soon after, is not valid. If there is an update I want it cause that update could solve a problem I'm having with that app currently.
