He just wants a smaller, less functional version of iOS 7 Meg. You know, like iOS 5.1.1. Oh, wait.

😁
I hope this helps the unfortunate that are reading this post, trying to rescue hanging installations or broken apps on their OS5.1.1 or earlier device. Than you Phil0124 for cutting through all the posturing and acidity and providing a real solution for us. Skip to the bottom of this email for my append to his solution. Most of us are not Apple wizards, and it really does appear that Apple (who goes out of their way to make an easy product to use) has made a point to make this process very difficult and non-intuitive. I will say that for me, and apparently many others that visit this forum, the process is NOT intuitive and I almost gave up with hate and bitterness toward Apple. Honestly, if Apple wanted to help the Ipad1 users they could make this process much more seamless, like Android does. We could start whole new threads as to why they make it difficult but that wont help us. Okay off my soapbox.
I paid for and downloaded an app, directly on my Ipad1, that claimed OS 4.3 and up compatibility on their homepage. The app is DVDProfiler. The app started to install then hung 2/3 of the way in. Embarrassingly, I fiddled with this for half a day. Eventually I logged into Itunes and downloaded the app from there - it loaded in Itunes!. So then I tried to sync. No luck, the app is still hanging during install on my Ipad. A day later I found Phil0124s post. Thank you Phil0124!!! However, I could not get it to work. Finally, the next day, I figured out what step I was missing: So here is a slightly modified method for those that are still having trouble. I am somewhat embarrassed that I did not figure all this out days ago; I guess I missed the forest from the trees with all the comments on the web like: 'you have to jailbreak your iPad'; or, 'Just upgrade the device, its obsolete'. I will tell you your Ipad1 is not as obsolete as you are being told by the masses. And there likely is a way to get the legacy apps you need to keep that device relevant!
Assumption, you have an app that is hanging on install or that you want to install but cant figure out how to get last version that works on your device:
1) Run Itunes on a device that supports it (there may be other ways, however, i dont know what they are). I used my Windows 7 PC.
2) Login to iTunes with the same AppleID used on the target Ipad or other legacy product.
3) 'Purchase' the app in Itunes (if you have not already). Yeah, it might be free. Mine was a purchase.
4) Download the app in Itunes (if 'purchased' earlier it will be available for download)
5) At this point, I synced with my device - however, I dont think this is necessary. You could easily try below without syncing and see if it works
6) Now go to the device (Ipad) and remove the app if it is hanging or showing up greyed out. To do this, simply press the app icon until it starts to wiggle, then tap the 'x' in the left hand corner.
7) Now go to the app store on the device (Ipad), go to the 'Purchased' page, and click install (or possibly download?) under the app.
8) If all goes well, a dialog should pop up asking you if you want to install a legacy version. As a disclaimer, the app might not have a legacy version; however, quite a few do. If it does not then there is another step you need to take to get here that I am unaware of.
The step I kept missing was #6. I had poisoned the pot, as they say, by leaving the app on my Ipad in an uninstalled state (greyed out). I did not think it mattered since the app store still showed an install button. I suspect a flag is set and you have to remove the app completely from the device to reset the flag. If you are trying the above steps with difficultly, and eventually make it work; then, please refine my steps for the next lost soul that stumbles on this thread.

Read the requirements for things before purchasing. Is it really Apple's fault you didn't bother to do that?
WHat about bleach brave souls? Will that work?
Don't really know. But since its free, you can give it a shot. Download it to a computer running iTunes first using the same Apple ID you are using on the iPad.
Once that is done download it to the iPad from the Purchased section of the App Store as explained in the provided support document.

As has been repeatedly explained, in the over 3 years and 14 pages of this thread's existence, you can't upgrade an original iPad past iOS 5.1.1
