Will my G3 Battery work in my new iBook G4

I want to know if my iBook G3 Battery will work in my iBook G4. They appear to be the same thing. Will it cause any problems?

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

The iBook G4 battery is the one that you will receive if you order a replacement battery for your G3 Dual USB iBook. It will work, but the batteries are upgraded as newer, better battery technology becomes available. Don't expect to receive the same performance from the G3 battery that you do from the newer one. Even when the G3 battery was new, it had lower specs than a new G4 battery.

Thanks for the feedback on the battery.

As for the question regarding why I would buy an ibook when the new Mac Books are available it is pretty simple. One, the cost. Two it always takes Apple a while to fix the kinks in there new products. I am just waiting for the first big problem to happen to the new Macs with intel. Hopefully, the bugs in there hardware are worked out for the iBook. Don't get my wrong I like Macs but am still bitter over having to buy a new computer just because my Logic Board went out 3 weeks after my warranty was up. And you say why didn't you just fix the logic baord. Well I didn't see that it was reasonable to pay $400 plus for a repair that only had a 90 day warranty only to possibly have it fail again three weeks after the warranty was up again.

There is no Classic support on the MacBook. That may not be important to everyone, but it is to a lot of people.

There are some good deals to be had on the remaining iBooks.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a MacBook.

my Logic Board went out 3 weeks after my warranty was up.

Is this a G3 or a G4 iBook with a bad logic board? The G3's (only) are covered by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program, although there is a three-year time limit on the coverage (based on original purchase date of the iBook).

I was planning to pose the same question when I found yours. Have you used your G3 battery in your G4?

My G3 12" 800 MHz ibook suffered its third and final LB failure and Apple would also not cover my repair for essentially the same reasons as you stated (although mine failed after six months and after my Applecare expired). I would have liked it to last another year or so and I would have bought an intel mac at that time.

Instead, I bought a refub G4 unit from Apple and decided that it was the best way for me to go at this time. I considered the Macbook, but felt that I would do better to wait for rev 2 and let the systems and software mature.

So far I'm very please with the new 'book and its speed (increased memory to 1.5 GB). The faster processor, 1.33, 1.5 GB memory, and larger hard drive should allow me to transition just fine.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on how the battery works.

Regards,

There is no reason to fear using your iBook G3 battery in your iBook G4. It won't harm it in the slightest (the battery or the iBook).

I have not swapped the batteries in mine simply because I work on the adapter nearly all the time, but I would not hesitate to swap them if the occasion arose where I needed to do that.

As a matter of fact, you do need to charge the iBook G3's battery from time to time in order to keep it functional. If you decide you want to store it, follow the procedure listed in this Apple article:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

A stored battery won't last forever, though, so you'd just as well get whatever use you can from it while it is working.
