I have just brought Apple TV MD199X/A and was hoping to mirror my laptop screen to the TV but can't find the Airplay icon. I have a Macbook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.5, late 2011.
Is OSX Lion not the same as OSX Mountain Lion? I'm a newby Mac user.

Correct. You would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion to be able to utilitize AirPlay with your Apple TV.
Make sure your Mac can run Mountain Lion > System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
Moutain Lion can be purchased from the Mac App Store - OS X Mountain Lionfor $19.99 (U.S.)
A good way to discern one OS X from another is the version number.
Lion OS X v10.7
Mountain Lion OS X v10.8
To see which version your Mac has installed, click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.

If you cannot or do not wish to upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, look into AirParrot:
That will give you the ability to mirror your MacBook through an Apple TV. The performance isn't quite as good as with native AirPlay Mirroring, but it's worked pretty well for me.
