iPhone 4 facetime not working

For some reason Facetime in my iPhone 4 is not working. This started last week only. Everything is working except for this. iPhone 5 and iPads are working though. Any idea how I can fix this? Are you also having the same problem?

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3

Dr. Bob, I hope the luster can be saved.

OK, so I'm a patient Apple fanatic. Like everyone else I'll wait till I get my iPhone 5S, presumably by the end of September.

I just hope that even after iOS 7 comes out and I have a new phone, this problem will disappear. I wonder what it is about the iPhone 4 hardware (chipset?) that makes it so much more vulnerable to the relay solution to Facetime than the iPhone 5? If I didn't upgrade to an iPhone 5S but just upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS 7 would the problem remain?

The Virnetx royalty situation isn't likely to change. Will they be able to stop using relay servers or find a work-around for this? anyone have a handle on the technology here going forward?

Facetime isn't just bad. It's gone, at least for me. Can you hear my 7 crying grandchildren in the background? 😢

Today, I had to turn off my iPhone in order to do a facetime session between the Facetime app on my MacBook Pro and the Facetime app on my son's iPad mini using his email address because when the phone was on and sitting next to the laptop it kept killing the Facetime connection. TURN IT OFF! Can you believe? Can anyone else out there duplicate this condition?

I though nevets2 article from Ars Technica held the answer, but as a test I just now made an attempt at connecting with someone right in my neighborhood via FaceTime, and IT WORKED FINE. Yet attempting FaceTime again with my family member in another state is not working right now, plus she is trying to connect with me and we continue to get call failed or lost connection messages.

It would be great if we had inside intelligence on Apple's iCloud networks to know when they actually switch over to these relay solutions to Facetime in specific regions and then hear from the folks who are immediately afftected in those regions. A nince cause and effect proof of concept.

At the same time, have we also been told that it's only the iPhone 4 hardware that gets affected by these relay switchovers. I don't remember if there have been any iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 users reporting here that their Facetime capability has been degraded.

I'm going to go back and search and see, but I have to complete this message before I do or lose it.

iPhone 4S &iPhone 5 having similar Facetime problems?

Nope

Of course if you search these fine support communities you find instances of people having problems with iPhone 5's and Facetime. But none of them seemed to fall into the category that we iPhone 4 users find ourselves.

So if it's strictly an iPhone 4 hardware problem with these new anti-patent violation arrangements - using relays instead of direct phone-to-phone connections - when is Apple going to own up to the problem?

They have probably said once the 500,000th iPhone 4 user offically complains about it, we'll set up a formal process whereby iPhone 4 users can bring in their phones to the Apple Store and their techies will do what has to be done to restore Facetime functionality without losing any of the phone data that is on the phone.

How long will it take till we get there?

Or is there any likelihood that Apple's Facetime patent legal troubles will end, that they will abandon the use of relays and that our iPhone 4 Facetime functionality will miraculously be restored?

Nevets.....

not quite correct. I am on a 4S not bought at Launch times and have the problem. I have had chunks of time where no connection was possible. And since early spring, almost every call gets a black screen that says "lost connection" though I can still hear them, or if they get the screen, I can still hear them. we get booted off, but usually can reconnect. A typical 30 minute call can take 3 - 6 reconnections. I am in California on AT&T. "They are in England and Cyprus / Greece. Usually it's only me getting the messages, but lately, Cyprus and Greece have been getting them as well.

I am curious what other problems 4S and 5s could be having with the disconnection or no connection in the first place that is not the same issue as your 4 are having?

Shame Apple doesn't have the integrity to either honor the patent or fix the service some way. We bought in for certain benefits, that are no longer being delivered

Okay I had this problem and solved it but took an hour.

-used two seperate phones to identify where the problem is coming from

- realized it was from my wifi after making a cellular data facetime call

I switched my internet wireless lan settings, I basically have two accounts and this is the difference between the two

Worked

802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b

Doesnt work

802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n and 802.11a

Hope this works for others

Hi happy users

Based in France I have tried as suggested using Tango. The quality is poor and also get cut off quite often. No better than Skype.

I do regret FT but hope the release of io7 on September 19th will allow us to get back to the real reason why I bought my Iphone originally. Apple failed their contrat with theirs users. I'm not quite sure I will be fooled a second time with the new Iphone 5...

Might shoop somewhere else.
