How do I create text file with .lrc extension in MAC?

I'm a recent Windows convert; so far it's been pretty smooth adjusting EXCEPT I can't for the life of me figure out how to save a text file with the necessary .lrc extension in the Mac text editor. It says something like "cannot have lrc extension, must have lrc.txt.
In windows, I could just use Notepad or Wordpad, and it would just accept a file being saved with .lrc extension.
How do I accomplish this on a MAC?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

TextEdit is a convenient utility that allows for quick viewing of various basic text formats, and for making quick changes to files.
To create a text file with .lrc extension Open TextEdit Preferences, under Format choose plain text, and under Open and Save deselect "When Saving a File: Add ".txt" extension to plain text files"
