THe original remote for our Apple TV disappeared, so I bought a new one. I cannot pair it with the Apple TV because I have to way to get to the Settings Menu. What do I do?
This is a 4 year thread that is talking about the first generation Apple TV and its white remote. It no longer applies today.
For newer Apple TVs, any silver remote will work without pairing to control any newer Apple TV including the 4th generation Apple TV.
If you have a 4th Generation Apple TV and want to pair a new black siri remote to it:
1. Place the Siri Remote within 3 inches (about 75 mm) from the Apple TV and point it at the Apple TV.
2. Hold down the MENU and VOLUME UP buttons for 5 seconds. Note that these buttons are placed diagonally from each other, so you might need two hands.
After a few moments a message stating the remote is connected should appear on screen.

First you have to unpair the old remote:

You can use any Apple Remote to unpair Apple TV from a remote. Note: If you lose the Apple Remote that you paired with Apple TV, a replacement remote will not work until you unpair Apple TV from the lost remote.
Press and hold the Menu and Previous/Rewind buttons on a white Apple Remote for 6 seconds, or the Menu and Left buttons on an aluminum Apple Remote for 6 seconds.

When you’ve successfully unpaired a remote, Apple TV displays a broken chainlink symbol above a picture of a remote. You can now pair Apple TV with a different remote.
Or you can download the Remote App on your iPhone/Pad/Pod Touch and use that to control the Apple TV.
How can that work when I can not even turn on the Apple TV without the original yet now missing remote. I can not unpair it. I have tried to activate the apple remote on my iPhone and I turned on sharing however the Apple TV will not appear on my phone despite it all being on the same account. How am I supposed to opporate devices that are not talking to each other? I still personally cannot get into the Apple TV settings. Is there a work around. I have already tried unplugging devices and plugging that in as some electronics force activation that way and it does not even work in this scenario
