Why does the Macbook Pro trackpad not recognize 'finger and thumb' as 'two fingers'? I'm intrigued as to how it knows when one is using the thumb in place of a finger when a two-finger motion is called for.

Just tried it ...
Probably how close together the contact points are. If you carefully hold the thub right beside the finger, it works. But that is a harder pose to hold than fingers side-by-side.
