I just got off the phone a few hours ago with Straight Talk Technical Support. They are telling me that their phone comes UNLOCKED (which is why they do not offer unlocking -- you do not offer unlocking if your phones come unlocked!). The problem arises when people think that they can put SIM cards into them. You cannot do that with a CDMA phone (hence the confusion and why everyone seems to think that their phones are locked). CDMA phones require a computer hookup from your CDMA provider to transfer carriers. So you have to go to Verizon to get them to hook you up. You cannot just call them up nor can you just pop in a SIM card.

I was upset too when the phone that I specifically requested be an unlocked phone appeared to be a locked one. Once it was explained to me that I *do* have an unlocked phone, I became a lot calmer (oh, and unlike some of the people on here, I do like the Straight Talk service for what I do but I also want the ability to leave for another carrier if I can find a better deal elsewhere sometime in the future).

So I think that the issue is one of poor communication. If you ask Straight Talk if you can use another SIM card in the phone, the answer will be no. If you ask them if they can unlock your phone, the answer will be no. If you ask them if your phone is already unlocked, they will tell you "yes". Whether you can port your phone to another carrier, however, depends on whether the other carrier is willing to accept your unlocked phone (Verizon is a "yes"; Sprint PCS, I understand, may be a "no").

The iPhone 5 is a world phone and has a GSM radio in it. To use it with Verizon and Sprint and get LTE you MUST have a SIM in it. A Verizon iPhone 5, due to a deal with the FCC, comes with the GSM side unlocked. You can put an AT&T nanoSIM in it and it will work although you will not get LTE due to band differences.

Throughout this thread Straight Talk has given different information to different people and people are reporting different experiences. One of the original posters said he was able to use it with nanoSIMs in Europe on various GSM systems but had trouble getting it to work with Straight Talk when he returned.

Look at your iPhone 5, if you have one, and you will see a nanoSIM slot on it.
