Roland Fantom G8 and Logic Pro 9 HELP

Hey everyone!

I recently purchased Logic Pro 9 in order to make music through my laptop. I have a Roland Fantom G8 that I am trying unsuccessfully to play through Logic Pro 9 and be able to record what I am playing. I have a mio 1 in 1 out USB to MIDI that I have plugged in to my computer and into my keyboard, but I'm still not getting any sound to come through my computer. Please help.

You have to monitor or record your fantom through its audio outputs. MIDI is only performance data...what notes you played and when and how loud. You must send that MIDI information back to the fantom in order to hear anything. Use an instrument channel strip with an "external" instrument in the instrument slot. It will let you set MIDI port and channel AND audio inputs for the same instrument.

Look at the transport while you hit the keys on the phantom. Do you see MIDI notes and velocities showing up? The MIDI monitor is to the right on the transport window. Have you set up as I suggested... "Use an instrument channel strip with an "external" instrument in the instrument slot. It will let you set MIDI port and channel AND audio inputs for the same instrument."

What kind of audio interface are you using?

Apologize for jumping in.... I think the Fantom G8 does both audio and MIDI through USB.

It's difficult to tell from your post how familiar you are with the tools you have.

However, you really need to KNOW the equipment and will need to put some work in regarding both the Fantom and Logic.

Have you installed the most Current Mac drivers for the Fantom, it requires drivers, there is also a Fantom system update available.

I highly recomeend you go here and if nothing else read the "Exploring Logic Pro Manual"

Also very important, read: Configuring Your Audio Hardware

Thanks-

Slap me silly!

Is that an M-Audio product, or one of those cheap interfaces that don't seem to work well under recent operating systems? Seems foolish to use an old school interface considering the Fantom's builit-in Interface.

To the original poster.. The cable ends marked IN go to MIDI OUT on the keyboard.

As DSS mentioned, MIDI is not sound/audio.. it's only your keyboard performance that's being recorded.

May I ask, what sound do you expect to come through, do you mean a Logic software instrument? Do you mean your Fantom. Where do you expect the sound to come from? Are you using and Audio interface or the Mac's internal audio system?

Do you fully understand that MIDI is not audio and has nothing to do with sound? I don't know if you are familiar with an early "player piano" It used a paper piano roll that "triggered" the keys. That's what MIDI is, it's a tiny bit of data that triggers ANY instrument capable of receiving MIDI note data.

Have you installed the drivers for the Fantom and does Logic's audio preferences show the Fantom as an Input device and your audio system as an output device?

Also, you may have to go into the Fantom's USB setup to activate Audio (or MIDI) Output.

I think you need to realize that there's no sound through the MIDI cables... that's not what MIDI is.

In order to hear and record your keyboard you either need to hook it's L/R audio outpits into the Mac's audio system or use the Fantom's built-in USB Audio/MIDI interface.

That' what the page of driver's I posted is for, they are drivers for the Fantom's USB Audio/MIDI USB interface.

Hi mate, i have a Fantom G, install the drivers and use USB (MIDI) instead of the 'old school' MIDI ports, will suit what you're trying to achieve much better.

Yes, it functions as a midi keyboard, but when you have it connected via USB you can have audio going direct to your computer and back PLUS use it as a midi keyboard.

MIDI, if you're unaware is basically a series of messages that tells your computer when a note has been pressed, which note it is, and when it's been released. So when you're recording MIDI data, no sounds have been recorded. However, when you play that recorded MIDI data back, it will trigger your Fantom to play exactly how you originally recorded.

But it will playback out of your Fantom's line outs/headphone ports.

You either need to connect a cable from those ports into your computer... OR, as already stated, use the USB port, install the USB Audio driver and you're golden mate!

As the Fantom is multi-timbral (i.e. you can use many different sounds at once) then you will need to look into MIDI Channel numbers and setting up your Logic tracks to correspond with what sounds you have loaded on which channels. But one step at a time! 🙂
