iMAC can not identify canon mx712 as a scaner

We have an iMAC and a mac book pro. Both running os x mountain lion with the latest updates.

We have been using a cannon MG8120 printer+scanner and both computers can use its printing and scanning functions.

All computers and printers are connected through wifi with WAP.

Recently we added a canon MX712 multifunction printer/scanner/fax.

We did the set up for MX712 on the mac book and it can use both MG8120 and MX712 as printer and scanner.

The iMAC can detect the MX712 as a printer and use it for prinitng. But it can not detect the MX712 as a scanner

when I tried to add it as a scanner.

I belive I did install the MX712 driver for scanner on the iMAC. Actually I did it several times.

Any suggection ? Thanks in advance.

Regards,

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

By installing the MX scanner driver, you should have an application called Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector located in /Applications/Canon Utilities/IJ Network Scanner Selector EX. If you open this app, a network discovery is performed and the MX should be listed. Does this occur?

Also, the scanner component uses the Bonjour protocol while the printer uses a Canon proprietary protocol. You can modify the Preferences > Advanced in Safari to add a Bonjour bookmark. Selecting this bookmark will then do a network discovery of all Bonjour devices. Do you see the MX?

Thanks.

I tried on my iMac.

I used the scanner selector and did see the MX.

I also added the Bonjour bookmark and saw a Bonjour folder in my bookbark bar.

Inside the folder there is a link to the MX device, also a link to the MG device.

When I tried to add a printer through Sytem Preference --> print and scan,

The MX showed up as Canon Network IJ and Bonjour Multifunction.

I tried to add each of them. Each became another printer.

The iMac and its OS X Mountain Lion somehow does not recognize the MX as a scanner.

Do I need to do some sharing on my mac book pro to share the scanner ?

There is a "print sharing" option under "print and scan".

The mac book pro is where I first installed the MX drivers.

Thanks.

The Bonjour Multifunction entry should have created a Print and a Scan button, as shown below for an MX895, providing the ICA driver for the MX712 is installed. This ICA driver is available from Apple Software Update and should be downloaded and installed when the MX is added to the Mac - the same way the printer driver would have been obtained.

Note that the above is only required if you want to scan using Image Capture or Preview. If you want to use Canon's MP Navigator application, then your Mac has the full scanner driver installed and ready based on your results (the scanner is seen with the Scanner Selector app). To use the network scanner with MP Navigator, you need to open the Preferences for the application and then under the General tab, select the networked MX as your preferred scanning device.

Regarding the MX710 series not being available in the Product Name drop menu, this would indicate that the scanner driver is not installed.

To confirm this, open Finder and navigate to Library > Image Capture > TWAIN Data Sources. There should be a Canon MX710 series.ds and a Canon MX710 series Network.ds file. If they are not present then download and install the MX712 scanner driver.
