BSOD after closing Itunes (newest version, also older versions) error: Reference by pointer 0x000000018

What a strange happenning!

While trying to figure out how to get all my apps into the new iTunes Apps folder (iTunes had not 'found' them when I re-installed from scratch) I took a huge chance and re-installed the new iTunes 11.0.4.4(x64) 'on top of' the version11.0.1.12(x64) I had previously installed.... hoping it would pick up the apps that I had moved into the 'user/music/iTunes/iTunes media/mobile applications' folder.

The new version did not 'find' my apps either, so I hope someone can help me with a way to get iTunes to recognise them. Also, it did not pick up my music library - only about 5 albums, all the rest were not found.

BUT....

When I closed iTunes....

No more BSOD!!!!

Somebody somewhere knew what was going on and knew how to fix it.

Perhaps it was the Vista update from this morning, which included:

MS.net Framework 4......Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2836939), MS.net Framework 3.5 SP1......Server 2008 R2 for x64.......(KB2836940) and Malicious software removal tool (KB890830)

or perhaps someone in Apple fixed the bug and today's update took my bug away....

or perhaps there is more than one god out there and one is a benevolent hacker....

But I no longer get BSOD when I close iTunes. My original problem has magically been solved.

Can anyone help me get iTunes to find all my apps (they are still on my iPhone, but don't show in iTunes) and does anyone know of a fast way to get my music library into iTunes .

Well I just talked to my friend and compared her preference settings with my own. Told her to uncheck "Share my library on the local network", as well as a few other settings. And now, suddenly Itunes is not causing a crashdown when closing. Not sure if unchecking the share over network box, or some other Apple magic solved the problem, but now she is fine!

I've lost track of this somewhat. I have reinstalled an earlier version of iTunes (8) and I am now getting the following error:

I was racking my brain for any changes... I didn't do anything.

My only MS update in about 6 days was windows defender last night/today .

I had let ESAT scan my Classic iPod, but it found nothing.

I was cleaning up/organizing some files.

Really wish I could point to some action that would help others.

I can't help you with apps. But finding your music should be easy. Go to "Music" view and then click on "songs" view. Look in the right column for a "!" you might need to page down. Once you find one, just double click it and it will say it can't find it just use that message window to go find it and once you click on the file on you computer. It should ask if you want to search that location for other missing music. to find 600+ missing files I had to point to about 5 or 6 files and let it search each of them. It will tell you when it done and how many are still missing.

I also noticed the Windows Defender update on my friend's PC. I believe it came through after the fact that we were trying everything. I'm inclined to believe that particular update solved the problem. That sometimes happens. It takes the tech engineers a little while to say OOPS, and they need to push down a fix!

I agree with you. Defender did not fix it.

It just would be nice if they did push down a fix, to have let us know they where working on it.

I still make sure everything is closed on the computer before I shut down iTunes and I do hold my breath... expecting it to crash.

Thanks Symtex2000, although the whole scenario of installing a previous version of iTunes was supposed to be a work-around. I just hope there is a fix for the real issue at hand - for all of us - updating to the latest version.

As I mentioned in a previous post I tried installing an ealier version iTunes but that brought about it's own problems. I'm going to try, as you've suggested, installing the most recent version of iTunes. I'm not holding my breath but will I let you know how I get on.

I've installed version 11.0.4.4 of iTunes - no more BSOD at present.
