I know this thread is too old but I'm kinda in the same situation, so would you mind telling me is it better to try and update first normally using iTunes or should I use this method, and if this method is better, where should I download the firmware from? Step 4 I mean, should I Google it or what?
Did you get an answer? o_O
I'm having the same problem; and the only thing I want are the pictures. But my Windows8 Laptop doesn't recognize it. I got to My Computer and it only shows 'Local Drive' and 'DVD Drive'.
same exact problem here too. iphone5 spontaneously went into recovery mode this morning while i was on it, no update or prior issues... now it will not open and i am trying everything i can to get my photos off of it before i do a restore... my Windows PC also does not recognize the device.. HELP!! I did a back-up in june but have way too many pictures since then to lose. ..also, if i were able to somehow get it to do a back up now, does it erase the backup i have from june, or add it on. how does this happen, seems to be a known problem as so many others have had the exact same issue!!! 😟 .. any suggestions???
I tried to respond to the original post but it kicked me out with an error message. It's probably too late now, but I had the same issue (that's what brought me here) and I've saved my phone twice from saying it's in recovery mode.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or won't turn on - Apple Support
What was edited out was spam attempting to get you to pay for junkware that would not have solved your issue. If your phone is in Recovery mode it is too late to save any content. If you don't regularly make backups to iTunes or iCloud, or enable the built in daily automatic backup, or don't sync photos to iCloud, Dropbox, upthere.com, google photos or the dozen or so other photo storage services on the Internet they are gone.
Two posts just above yours contain a link to the Apple tech note on this process. Here it is again: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on - Apple Support
For getting the phone to show up, see: If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
Sounds like you might have iCloud Photo Library turned on? Also, if you have 11,000 photos on your device, then you need to import them somewhere, or you are going to lose them at some point:
A backup does not save all of your photos unless all of them are in the Camera Roll (if iCloud Photo Library is not on).

How do you know that it didn't install spyware, and is sending everything on your phone to a hacker? You would have no way of knowing.
Well first, iOS is secure and there is no way there is spyware or iOS viruses.
Two, there isn't signs of viruses on my iPad.
BTW, its an iPad not an iPhone
This isn't android! As I said there's no chance of hackers nor any type of malware.
Anyways, I just restored it fresh from within iTunes and restoring from my backup.
Okay, is this domain apple (What iTunes downloads from)
"appldnld.apple.com"
And no I have never jailbroken my iPad
I was going by your earlier post, where you said you downloaded from "Ipsw me"
My iPhone 6s just locked up after doing a software update. No back up. Going nuts! Apple said there is nothing that can be done. I just need my photos. Any thing you can suggest.
Did you get an error? If so, which did you get?
Edit: if you didn't back it up already and Apple said there is nothing they can do, unless it's a software issue, your data is gone
