ipod battery won't hold a charge

hey, i have had a 5th generation 30gb ipod for about 6 months now. i will listen to it for about an hour or so, with a ton of battery left and then turn it off, sometimes sliding the hold button on too to make sure it doesn'taccidentally turn on. But then the next day or so i will turn off the hold and try to turn it on to listen to it and nothing will happen. it just won't turn on. so then i'll charge it and it'll have to fully recharge, like it had had absolutely no battery before. what is wrong and what can i do about it?

thanks. i have tried to restore it before and i tried to recalibrate the meter/battery by charging fully, letting it run down, charging it and running down again. this could be part of the problem, but i can't restore it at the moment becuase the "genius" said to wait a while and to try to avoid plugging it in to the computer. Also, the meter said it was still green--probably a third full. But i really do appreciate your comment/suggestion. i can use all the help i can get. KatBT

ok, so it has died over night a couple more times since i took it in and i decided to plug it into the computer and put my songs on it again. it had to be restored for the computer to work with it. (they formatted it so that it wouldn't communicate with windows perfectly so that the songs on it that they put on couldn't be put onto my computer using a third party application). so it seems to not have died overnight again, but after two hours of continuos play with out being pressed or the bick light turning on it turned off and the battery was dead.

I know it doesn't help you directly but I have exactly the same problem with a 30Gb Video Ipod. it is only 3 months old and is a replacement for a 30 Gb ipod bought last xmas that had the same problem. Funny thing is my girlfriend and i bought a 30Gb and 60Gb from another store and have had no problems with either of them. They all use the same charger and computer.

Perhaps there is a BAD batch out there! Does anyone from Apple monitor these discussions and would they care to comment??

I suppose so ...
I took it to the store again to have it looked at, and heres what happened:
I had determined that it had a bad battery. So anyways, when I talked to the guy I explained that I had charged it completely the night before and the next morning I tried playing a song for about 30 seconds and the battery had already drained halfway. I also explained to him that sometimes the battery would die overnight. So he checked it out and decided that they would do a battery test, which takes about 24 hours. I then mentioned that I had brought it in before for the same problem and that they didn't do anything that worked. So then he worked on it for about 10 minutes, ordered something to be brought to him, and asked for my phone number and did something with it on the computer. Next I new, he had another iPod out, was writing on mine with a sharpie, acking it up and handing me the new one with some forms. Just a signiture and a new iPod! So now here I am putting all my songs onto it and waiting to see how it works. Ol' crappy had really gotten on my nerves, the battery had never really worked quite right. And luckily I brought it in when I did; the warranty ended in 6 DAYS! I also got a sweet new case for it.

I'm having the exact same problem. And my warranty just ran out in Dec 06! My battery started losing charges gradually, then one day it wouldn't hold a charge at all. I thought it was damaged by the new iHome portable radio, but it's never worked since putting it in the dock of that system.

I've tried all the solutions recommended - except going to Apple. I am going to try installing a new battery, but I agree that there may be a bad "batch" out there since we all seemed to receive ours Winter 05. I'd welcome any additional help with this - I'm SO FRUSTRATED!! Help me?
