Java installation error

When trying to install Java on my brand-new MacBook Pro Retina, I get a "The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance" error. This occurs for both the JRE and the JDK install. The install log documents the error as follows:

The .dmg format is a volume image commonly used for distributing Mac software. A Mac-only .zip workalike, if you will. As such, it requires NO extra software to use. Simply double-click on a .dmg and it will be mounted like if you had inserted a CD or a diskette in other systems. However, in a default Mountain Lion installation, that may not be apparent if you have not set Finder preferences to show disks/DVDs/etc. on the desktop and/or the Finder window sidebar.

Once you have accessed the jre-7u25-macosx-x64.dmg install media by double clicking it, inside you will find the Java installer that you have to run in order to get Java installed or updated in your Mac:

Note that installing this product requires authentication with an Admin-enabled user. If your system has permissions problems, you may get various errors: run Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk Permissions on the Macintosh HD startup volume first to correct.

"Someone on the Ars Technica forums realized what was wrong. I will bet quite a bit of money that you used The Unarchiver to unzip the file that contained the

.mpkg

file. Apparently, something about the way it unzips introduced some sort of corruption. If you go back, and instead of using The Unarchiver, use Apple's own Archive Utility, then try the installation using that newly unzipped

.mpkg

, it should work. It worked fine for me."

Thanks nbar. The install files come from Oracle in the .dmg format. They are jdk-7u25-macosx-x64.dmg and jre-7u25-macosx-x64.dmg. As far as I know, I don't have any 3rd party unarchive utilities installed, but how would I check? Also, have another MacBookPro (older non-retina from which I switching to this one) with exactly the same OSX version and didn't have any problems installing it there.
