YES, avoid ANY Western digital drive. Apple uses Hitachi or Toshiba (made by Hitachi) drives, which are the best. Today, there are ONLY 3 makers of conventional Hard Drives.

get a Toshiba (made by Hitachi) or Hitachi 1TB HD, a 1TB drive is only about $70 now even in retail. you CANNOT INSTALL a 1.5 TB drive, because thickness is 12.5mm thick

A macbook CANNOT accept anything thicker than a 9.5mm HD. (=1TB max)

7mm = 500GB max

9.5mm = 500GB or 750GB, or 1TB

12.5mm = 1.5TB

15.2mm = 2TB

I use SSD's (Crucial 3 and 4, Samsung 830 840, OCZ but is has been thrown out lately), they are not expensive anymore, but do reads in the range of 400-500 writes 250-450.

Are there any alternatives for the Seagate XT Momentus (which was the "problem" disk in the "old" days)?

And I use Hitachi, Toshiba and Samsung(Hitachi) HDD's in the space of the superdrive (6 MBP's now).

I have used the XT range since it was avalable (not quite, the very first XT was Windows only), I have 5 and many more than that have passed through my hands. 1 failure, a 750 that stopped rotating after a year or so, Seagate gave me another.

There is a new Seagate (1TB) that have no experience of and there is now at least one other manufacturer makng Hybrids (Hitachi?)

For the size I am looking for (more than 500GB) SSD's are still expensive.

That is not the case. Some more recent MBPs will accept a 12.5 mm thick HDD.

No, on the contrary,....... I dont know who told you that, but a 4 month old MACBOOK PRO non-retina wont accept a 12.5mm drive, Ive tried it, .....no go. 😊

Please refer to my original post (which you have edited in your response) where I stated that the 12.5 mm thick 2.5" SATA drives will fit my MBPs. They are specifically 17" 2010 and 2011 models. Since OWC sells 12.5"mm thick HDDs and their technical staff tests their products, I do not think that they would misinform me. The track record that I have had with the technical staff has been 100% accurate.

Note that I did not say ALL MBPs can accommodate that size and that one should check with them first. You may consider calling them yourself. The number is 1 800 275 4576.

Ciao.
