Printing via wifi Direct from iPad

I have read that, if a printer is equipped with wifi direct, a phone or pad may wirelessly "sync" with it to print. However, when I read characteristics for individual printers equipped with wifi direct, they fail to mention this fact.

I would like to be able to print to a printer with my ipad without a network. I don't want to buy a wifi direct equipped printer only to find out that this won't work.

Alternately, is it possible to connect to a regular wifi printer with the iPad via an iphone hotspot and using airprint?

iPad, iOS 6.1.4
