Troubleshooting Chronic System Crashes

Continue having system crashes daily. I can only resume by turning off the power and restarting. What is the best way to troubleshoot this?

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), Adobe Creative Suite 5.5

With a non-reproducible freeze, nothing in the logs, and nothing from the AHT, you're pretty much in a hopeless position as far as self-diagnosis goes. I could tell you how to purge your system of third-party system modifications, but I have no reason to believe that it would help.

If you can find a way to reproduce the problem, that will help a lot.

The AHT is not very reliable and misses a lot of things, including memory faults, which may well be what you have. You could try taking the machine to an Apple Store and leaving it with the "Geniuses" for a few days to be tested. No guarantee they will find anything. You could also try repairing the boot volume in Recovery mode. That hardly ever does any good, but it doesn't hurt.

I do use a lot of RAM guzzingly programs and have them open simultaneously but have 16GB max memory though. Leaving my main work computer at the Genius Bar for that length of time would be only in desperation. I do notice that I have a lot of icons on my desktop, tend to leave them there when super busy like right now. I also got into the habit of leaving my computer on most of the time when working in multiple programs and during projects. Would any of these "habits" cause any hiccups?

Do you think we should leave this discussion open until it happens again? I went ahead and did a permission repair and problem has not occurred today.
