iPhoto not working.

My iPhoto is not working. I open it and it loads for about a minute and then it closes abruptly. I sent the report and tried to restart my Mac, but still have the problem. Any ideas?

I opened iPhoto but it crashed when I tried to import pictures from the harddrive.

So you are having a system wide problem. The first thing to try would be to reinstall iPhoto. Move the iPhoto Application to the trash and download it again from the AppStore.

if that does not help, tr to remember what else you installed directly before the problem first occured.

Installing iPhoto. Also, I deleted the other account. I have Mackeeper and did the error cleaning and everything. Anything else I should do in order to prevent my computer to be slow. I run physics simulations on my mac and need it to be top speed. Another question out of the blue, I have a mid 2012 13.3 inch Macbook Pro. i5 and 500 gigs. 4 ram. Should I go for Mavericks whenever that's ready?

Have you read the link in Allan's post? It will depend on your version.

This user tip explains a bit, why we are concerned: Do not install MacKeeper

I see, your primary reason to have it installed it, is to spead up your your Mac, but by automatically cleaning caches, etc, it may slow down your system even more. The caches are built, to speed up the system, so it will not have to compute the data over and over again. E.g. one of the files it removes (com.apple.xpchelper.cache) can make your mac slow as a snail, when playing videos.

If you have been running MacKeeper, reinstall your MacOS X - you can use the Combo Updater:

OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo)

If your mac is really unexpectedly slow, check your hardware and software, and the way you are using your mac - some ideas are here:

The Terms of Use forbid speculations on pre-release software in this Forum - look at the keynote presentation for Mavericks at Apple's main page to see, what may come in fall.

Are your physics simulations unusually slow? Then try the general diagnostics tools in Applications > Utilities to see what is taking up the processing time. A good starting tool is the Activity Monitor; also launct the Console Window, to see if there are unexpected error messages or diagnostic messages. If you find a problem, ask in the Mt. Lion Forum or MAcBook Pro forum for more help.

Hi Léonie,

Thanks for your advice on this, I have taken all recommended steps as far as checking iPhoto on another user account.

I had the same KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE appear as Khromosrick, but checking on a guest account DID work for me (thank god!) - I was able to add, amend, browse and delete photos with no problems.

If the crashes appear only in the user account, as you mention, what settings and/or startup items in the user account need fixing?

If it helps, I'm running 10.9.1 on an 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008), which otherwise seems to be working fine.

Thank you in advance!

Martha
