iphone 5 on old operating system

I just got a new iphone 5. I want my aps off my old iphone. I connected to my mac but it says that my version of itunes is too old for this phone. So I tried to download a newer version of itunes but it says that my operating system is to old... Is there anyway to connect the new iphone to the old operating system? Maybe an older (but newer to me) version of itunes I can get somewhere? Or do I have to use my pc to connect my new iphone to itunes? Something about that last question just doesnt sound right.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You need to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or newer on the Mac. No compatible iTunes version exists for Mac OS X 10.5.8 or PowerPC Macs.

If all you want on it is iTunes Store content, follow these instructions instead of syncing it.

How do I get OS X 10.8.6 or newer? Seems odd that I can download iTunes on my pc for free and the IPhone will work without upgrading my operating system but to work on my Mac I need an upgrade... Why is this?
