Macbook Core 2 duo Bulging Battery

Hi My Dad's Macbook 4.1 intel core 2 duo's battery has bulged underneath. <edited by host>. Is this a known about product fault for this models serial number?

It will not charge and it is also inhibiting the use of the track pad button.

My Dad was encouraged to take out Applecare but never used it. This has now expired. Is it possible that this is a fault that Apple will repair or supply a new battery due to it being a common problem?

Any help/advice is much appreciated

Have experienced that before, trackpad goes haywire because of a bulging battery. however, Apple did not rplace mine as l had bought it ages ago. if you have taken it to them and they didn't replace it, you may have to consider getting a new one. have been adviced by some people not to keep the MB plugged in if the charger has gone green (supposedly reduces the battery life).

With regards to being common, l'd say not really albeit it's a known problem that occurs.
