Is LPX inconsistent with prior versions?

When I opened a file first created in Logic 8 in Logic 9, I would get the message that "X (number of) stereo audio track and/or X (number of) stereo bus objects have been converted into a new format". This obviously changed the sound of things, what with panning, plug-ins, and sends, etc. getting all whacked. I learned from a Logic Support Technician that I needed to enable Universal Track Mode (UTM) in Audio Preferences, which I did, and it worked. The conversion messsage did not present upon opening the L8 files. The audio tracks and stereo bus objects remained unchanged and everything sounded as it should.

I have since been working on these files in L9, and so, upon opening them in LPX, and getting that same message, I immediately knew what to do... enable UTM. However, the option wasn't in Audio Preferences to select. So, I came to this forum to see what gives and I read that UTM is *always* enabled in LPX.

Well, if that is the case, then why are my audio tracks and bus objects being converted into a new format?... everything, obviously, sounds totally whacked.

I mean, if UTM is enabled in LP9 and the files open without issue, should they not open in LPX without issue? It doesn't make sense.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

R

Michael,

Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure that is it.

As I had explained, the Logic Technician had me turn 'universal track mode' ON (in L9) in order to avoid the conversion that was happening when I opened L8 files in L9. Once I checked the box (enabling UTM, thus turning it ON, right?) then the files opened without any unwanted conversions.

So, since I have UTM checked/enabled in L9, and since UTM is always ON in LX, shouldn't the files open exactly the same way... without converting. It seems unnecessary (and counter-intuitive) to be able to turn UTM OFF.

Then again, I am still a neophyte in many ways.

As for Stereo Busses, that was the way I was taught to do things by someone who knew much more than I did.

I don't remember L8

But ... I have UTM off on L9 ... always ... because I use stereo busses

(for parallel processing and stereo mic control)

When I turn on UTM on a L9 project

I get the exact same message:

that "X (number of) stereo audio track and/or X (number of)

stereo bus objects have been converted into a new format

And:

It's the same message I get when I open a L9 project

with LPX

Are you seeing -any- stereo busses in LPX?

Do your L9 projects have stereo busses?

You aren't using split stereo files (as opposed to interleaved) for some reason, are you ? I think files imported from Pro Tools are in this format.

I believe Logic X displays both sides of a stereo file, but it must only be a display difference ? I really can't think of any reason to have Universal Track Mode disabled, unless its something I'm totally unaware of.
