Japanese purchased iPhones do not always have the shutter sound audible. I just got an iPhone 6S Plus from Tokyo this week, model A1687. I'm using it in China and it has no shutter sound at all. When I set it up, I selected the United States as my region as I'm an American who travels for work.

My wife has an iPhone 6 that was also purchased in Japan, I'm not sure what model number it is. Her phone has the very loud shutter sound and there has been no way for us to turn it off, including using the mute button or lowering the volume slider. Her phone is set up for the China region. She very much would like to turn the shutter sound off so I'm going to contact Apple support to find a solution or I might see if I can do it with iFunbox even though our phones are NOT jailbroken.

  1. See, at Top and left side of your iPhone – there you will see a Mute button.
  2. Move that mute button from top to down side softly. ...
  3. Capture a Photo thorough your iPhone camera and test that it's Shutter sound turn off.

You're just a tad late to the party. This has been explained already but, what has also been explained is that, if your phone is from somewhere that doesn't permit the sound to be muted, that won't work.
