If it was purchased outright (brand new, no contract), most carrier will unlock it. If it's second-hand, though, that could cause issues.

Chester, you can contact Apple Support and find out the status of the unlock for that device. Be advised, Apple cannot unlock the iPhone. They can only explain the process and give you a status update.

If you read his post carefully he received this as a gift from a friend so the iPhone is new to the OP but most likely a second hand iPhone. And he said the friend has already started the unlock process with the carrier that it is locked with.

Since your friend is handling the unlock process and you were not the original owner of the phone and didn't subscribe to the cell carrier just work with your friend as he completes the unlock process. Do not call the cell carrier, do not call AppleCare.

Just be patient and work with your friend that gave you the iPhone.

I did read the post, Deggie. Please, let's not start that again. Nothing in his post indicated whether it was brand new or secondhand, which is why I allowed for both possibilities. Sometimes friends buy new, sometimes friends buy secondhand.

There will be not a status at Apple if the carrier has not yet contacted them. The carrier, depending on who it is, will give status reports to the friend and let him know when Apple has notified them that it is reading to use the information in that link which should also be included in the message from the carrier. If the OP needs it they can come back and click on the link that you kindly provided.

I still suggest they just work with the friend who was nice enough to give them the phone.

Did you contact your carrier? It's surprising that they will unlock it if it is new - first time I've heard of that.

The length of time for a cell carrier to process an unlock varies widely by carrier. Just be patient.
