Java update 16 on Mac OS X 10.6.8

Hi everyone,

I just updated to version 16 of Java to an iMac running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard version 10.6.8. Now I have an icon on the dock (usual black rectangle Unix application icon) of an application called "bin" which does not respond. It appears with the login, without starting any application.

When I quit it, it automatically restarts and again is not responsive. Everything looks functional but it stops the logout process so you cannot actually shut down the computer by clicking the apple and then "Shut down computer".

I right-clicked on the icon and then "Show in Finder" and a Finder windows appears showing a file called "java" in the following folder:

Macintosh HD\ System\ Library\ Frameworks\ JavaVM.framework\ Versions\ A\ Commands\

Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Uninstalling, downgrading?

Thanks in advance

Can you simply do this: open a Terminal window and drag in the bin executable from the Dock. Can you please copy and post the resulting path as it appears. If you'd like to keep your user name private, if that appears, then substitute asterisks ****or just write "username", no quotes, but don't add or remove any spaces.

Puzzled that you say "doesn't work here." How could you try this with reproducting it? And if the OP can get output from Terminal for ls -aleO

This is the output from dragging the java application which is shown on the dock:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel - 77360 Jun 7 22:58

then why wouldn't he be able to just copy the path?

But this isn't an ordinary app icon. I realize the results of running the command don't show in the post, but that doesn't mean the OP can't get the path the way I suggested. And the fact that the command yields results would appear to indicate this should work. Should at least try. Nothing lost if it doesn't work.

Don't know why I said that. Meant to say the path doesn't show in the posted output for the command....And that probably only means the OP just didn't show that. Normally, any command will show the file path right after the command.

Sorry, I thought the result was from your test. Going back, I see the OP posted that. Still, I don't know how he was able to do that, since I can't.

Well, this whole situation is rather extraordinary. But if I can get the path, then maybe I can safely give directions to rm that bin in the Dock (after making certain it's not needed.) Reveal in Finder would probably work as well.

Sorry for the delay in the answer guys and thanks for your help.

Dragging the bin application icon to the Terminal did not work for me. Nothing happened. What I did is right-click on the icon, click "Show in Finder" and then drag that java application file to the Terminal.

I explained this in the original post together with the path to this file. Is this what you are talking about?

By getting the absolute path of the item in the Dock, I wanted to find some way to remove just that, leaving the one in /System/Library intact. But if it's only showing as the one in /System/Library, then I don't want to mess with it.

This probably won't help, but it's harmless. What about opening Terminal in Utilities and entering

killall Dock

This will relaunch the Dock.
