You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds . . . The solution offered is to download and upgrade system but how do it do that when I can't start the computer?

I have this message on a grey screen and the suggested answer is to download and upgrade the operating system. As I can't start the computer are there any suggestions as to what I should do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

You get a black screen telling you to restart, in several languages? If so, that's a Kernel Panic.
