Q: Logic Pro X: How to separate left and right channel from a single audio file

Hi, you can do it this way:

When u click "convert to new audio files" a new window appears. Among others make sure that u choose in "Stereo Conversion" drop down menu the " Interleaved to split"

My preferred way of doing this:

In the Mixer on your >Stereo Out< choose >Bnce<

In the appearing window you're now able to configure  >File Type< >Split<, providing the result you're after.

if you want to access the audio files individually you'll have to change their label from >title.L.file format< and >title.R.file format< to respectively >title L.file format< and >title R.file format<.

And if you're wondering, I omitted the first point (.).

This is a great idea, but when I try to then re-import the selected files, either L or R only, it is still treating them as a stereo file.

I have tried importing to a mono track, but it always groups these two separate files together.

Anything else that needs to be done?

In the browser, you select the file, hit Edit (in the file browser) -> Disconnect Selected Split Stereo File, jump through some hoops, then it will let you.

Logic cannot extract the individual left and right channel of a stereo file and import them as two mono files. Also when you have  two split mono files (with the suffix .L .R or -L -R) and import only one, then Logic will recognize the other file and use both files and imports them as a single interleaved stereo file

That menu item was a left over from Logic Pro 9 and was removed in LPX v10.2

If I understand you question correctly, then you arrant talking about bouncing a stereo mix to mono. You have a stereo file and want to use its separate left and right mono channels.

Just place the (stere) Audio Region on an Audio Track and then control+click the Input Button on its Channel Strip. the popup menu lets you select the left or right channel. That means only the left or right channel of the Audio file is used on that Channel Strip.

If you want to use the left and the right channel of a stereo Audio Region, just place the same Region on two separate Tracks and set one to left and one to right

Mono Bounce

If you want to bounce your stereo mix as separate mono files, here is an alternate option:

On the Output Channel Strip, click on the Input Button, the one with the stereo symbol (double circle). It will split into two mono Output Channel Strips,now displaying a mono symbol (one circle). The little detail is that each Channel Strip has its own Bounce button. Clicking on one will mix your Project to a mono file with only that output channel.

"control+click the Input Button" trick doesn't work in case of Surround Tracks.

Is there a way to split 5.1 track to 6 different tracks (1 channel each) in similar way?

I had the same problem, and like you said that disconnect option isn't available in 10. eventually fooled it by renaming the files, different from each other. super annoying. But then I saw Edgar's post which would've totally worked for me and saved me a lot of trouble. Something Apple should fix though still.
