Can't open DMG file or installer.

Hi all!

There is few weird problem on my iMac, using OS 10.8.4

Firstly, I can't open .DMG file. Actually, nothing happens when I click on the file. No error message appears, nothing. I open the DMG file (it's the Adobe Patch installer to open Raw files) on my other MAC and I brought it on my iMac. However, the Adobe installer doesn't work neither. It does the same then the DMG: nothing, no error message.

Disk utility didn't find any error.

Secondly, if I try to open the About this Mac from the Apple menu, my entire screen turns gray. After 2-3 seconds, the finder reappears as if it was sleeping. Chrome restarts (it seems it's been shut).

The 2 problems might not be related.

I have Disk Warrior, but i'd like to try something else before going that way. Anything to suggest?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

If you mean that you used SD! to clone your external to the internal HD, then you might have wiped the Recovery HD partition. Do this: launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, enter this one-liner, and hit the return key.

defaults write com.apple.diskutility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1

Quit the Terminal app, launch Disk Utility, select Debug->Show every partition menubar option, and see if the Recovery HD displays. This is what's on my machine. You should see something similar. If not, contact AppleCare.

Nope, there is no Recovery HD. It might be the usage of SD that causes that after all. Do you think if I reinstall my system it could clear the situation? I will install a OS on my external hard drive on a friend's computer. Then I will reinstall it on my computer by booting with this drive. It could do it don't you think? I do have back up of my work so in any case, I won't lose it.

If your machine shipped originally with Lion or Mtn Lion, then the Internet recovery mode should work as long as your machine is qualified for it. See details in About OS X Recovery. Also, see Computers using Internet Recovery. If it shipped with SL or earlier, then you'll need to install 10.6.8 and retrieve your Lion/MtnLion installer from the Mac Apple Store.

Not so important, i think, but check that the DMG files are set to be opened with Disk Image Mounter.

Second: delete ALL caches with apps such M. Lion Cache Cleaner or Onyx or similar; repair permissions with Disk Utility. Restart when needed.

Not OK? Start from Recovery Disk... you don't have it... sorry...

Not OK? Check and if necessary replace Directory's file with Disk Warrior (great app!!!).

Not OK? Reset SMC: rt.apple.com/kb/ht3964. Ypu may need to perform this operation more tham one time but be sure to restart within a reset and another. Also: resettin the SMC does not reset PRAM. Perform PRAM reset (at least 2-3 reboots before releasing the buttons).

Good luck!!!!

Simon
