The problem may be that you need to log out of your iCloud account on your mac then log back in. That would be the first step.

Did this work?
Logging out of my Macbook Pro deletes all of my calendar and other things....while it's stored in iCloud, I'm leary of doing this. For some reason my desktop iMac works with iMessages (specifically chatting to those with iPhones in SMS/MMS, not iChat) and works on my iPad and from phone to phone, but not from my MBP to any of those devices.
This solved my problem:

According to one anecdotal report, Flash Player may interfere with iMessage, though I don't know how and can't confirm. To test this theory, select from the menu bar
▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
Close the preference pane. If this action solves the problem, please post your results.
Restart your computer and you should be good to go!
This worked for me! Nothing else did.
I Deleted all local data and rebooted and it worked fine. Weird how this can affect messenger... but yea.. Try it so you dont have to change your settings :-D
Oddly enough, this worked for me too. I deleted all data (and moved the radio button to "ask" instead of "block" and restarted.
Thanks!
As for me, I don't have flash player at all.
BUT, after Removing all website data in Safari preferences and restarting the App, I finally logged into Messages.
So I suggest you to try this if you don't have Flash Player installed in your system.
P.S. Oops. Jumped to conclusions. Still can't login.

I deleted all local data, restarted my mac, and then imessage is now able to sign in. Wierd problem.
What do you mean by saing "deleted all local data"?
What data? Where was it stored?
this just worked for me, thanks!
I didn't delete all data, just turned off, and imessage worked (took a few seconds, though). I also signed out of icloud. Not sure which was the culprit.
"just turned off" – is this related to Flash Player?
