This didn't solve my problem.

However I read further about someone saying they did this as well as signing out of iCloud. I started checking iCloud to see the settings and the iMessage account didn't have all my contact information. That may be a very vague statement and I will try to explain.

For whatever reason, I used my Gmail email for my Apple ID as well as Gmail. There looked to be both Google Talk (using Gmail ID) and then iMessage which had Gmail and iCloud email but not my phone? I don't know how all that syncs/works out..but it was my phone that wasn't activated on my Mac. I'm new to Mac so this is something I would have to sit and work on to understand. (i just finally figured out contacts syncing with work and personal and all my devices). Anyway, once I activated my phone, it then all connected and appears to be working. So check your acounts in iMessage.

For some unknown reason I have a similar problem. I can't even open iMessage on my MacBook Pro though it continues to send me notification.

It works vey well thoug on my iPad but on my iPhone I don't receive all the messages I receive on my iPad.

Don't relly understand what messed it all.

It used to work fine.

I'll try to close iCloud session on my Mac but why doesn't propose to cancel all my adresses instead of just shutting down?

Sorry, didn't provide any details.

I was having the problem on my iMac. Messages wouldn't open at all. This just out of the blue as it was fine before that.

This worked like a charm.

Thanks to Craig this solved my problem:

Step 9

According to one anecdotal report, Flash Player may interfere with iMessage, though I don't know how and can't confirm. To test this theory, select from the menu bar

 ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player Storage

and click

Block all sites from storing information on this computer

Close the preference pane. If this action solves the problem, please post your results.

Restart your computer and you should be good to go!

I tried pretty much everything that was suggested in all the posts I could find related to this issue. Including everything in the list below (and probably a few other things). It should be noted that I did NOT have a problem on my iOS device...all of the issues I was having was signing in to iMessage or Facetime on my Mac (OS X v.10.9.2 Mavericks). In both cases, I would get a message indicating it couldn't log in, and to check my network connection. The network connection was, of course, fine.

  • (Temporarily) removing related files in the Library > Preferences folder (I don't recall all the .plist files that I tried, but I just tried a bunch of stuff from posts I found. Sorry for the ambiguity, but there are no "com.apple.facetime.plist" or "com.apple.imessage.plist" files on my Mac, so there's no obvious files to try).
  • Resetting keychain
  • Updating date/time
  • Specifying DNS servers on my Wi-Fi connection to 8.8.8.8 and/or 4.4.4.4.
  • Removing Wi-Fi connection, and restarting
  • Repairing Disk Permissions
  • Resetting (changing) my iCloud password
  • Changing my iCloud credit card
  • ...and so on.

Finally, I was so fed up that I tried resetting my keychain again, still didn't work...however, immediately afterward I went into Users & Groups under System Preferences and I removed my apple ID that was associated with my user account on my Mac... I added another ID I have and saved it. Then I went back in and put my correct apple ID back in (the one I use for Facetime/iMessage and iCloud) and everything is now working again.

I wish I knew the root cause of the problem, but I do not. From all the research that is done, it definitely seems to be an issue where an account file (i.e. a certificate or preference file of some sort) gets corrupt and no longer accepts the login for iMessage & Facetime. Doing something, anything, that will change or update that file seems to work...but what that "thing" is that you need to do seems to be different for everyone. I wish I knew a more definitive fix but this worked for me so I thought I'd share.

If I ran into the problem again, here's what I'd try:

  1. Close out of iMessage and Facetime
  2. Reset the Keychain (KeyChain Access (app) > Preferences > "Reset My Default Keychain")
  3. Remove iCloud account from User account on Mac (System Preferences > Users & Groups > "{your name}" account > Apple ID (change) > choose account and hit minus button. Back out to save.
  4. Go in and re-add the Apple ID to your User account.
  5. If that doesn't quite cut it Sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and restart your machine...then sign back in when it reboots.

It seems that may work. I hope this helps at least some of you who are experiencing this issue... it was an extremely frustrating issue to troubleshoot/resolve/deal with!

I have tried all proposed solutions and nothing is working for me 😟 Whenever I try and log in the wheel showing that its 'thinking' just doesnt stop spinning, I left it going for two days it just kept on going as if it was trying to sign in - I know its not a password issue because I intentionally put in the wrong password and straight away it told me that I had entered an incorrect password. Very frustrating!!
