Synchronize Clips On Timeline

I understand that FCPX 10.0.8 allows you to synchronize clips from within the browser but what about clips that are already on the timeline?

I am editing a wedding and have finished the begging and end. I just need to sync and edit the ceremony in the middle of the timeline.

I have a little experience with the program "PluralEyes" but I want to leave my pre-ceremony and reception finished and in place while only syncing the middle part (Ceremony) within the same open project.

Thank you in advance!

Fox_m had some good time saver tips for synchronizing clips within the timeline.

Russ indicated that syncing has to be done in the "Event Browser" then brought into a new timeline. I just cut and pasted this new synced sequence from the new project into my original project and it worked ok. Just wish this could all be done to a group of clips already on the original timeline within its original sequence.

Thanks guys for you help!

Hi Russ...I did my best to follow the steps. I group selected the clips in the timeline then right clicked and selected “New Compound Clip.” I then right clicked that compound clip in the timeline and selected “Reveal in Event Browser.” I then right clicked that and “Synchronize Clips” is grayed out.

There were two clips on my timeline. They each contained audio and video. I placed them close to where they should be. I then group selected the clips in the timeline then right clicked and selected “New Compound Clip.” I then right clicked that compound clip in the timeline and selected “Reveal in Event Browser.” I then right clicked that and “Synchronize Clips” is grayed out. I think for the “Synchronize Clips” option to work- there has to be more than just one item selected in the "event browser"

Unless Im misunderstanding- I think i will just have to locate each of clips from the "event brouser" manually and synchronize that way.

One way to do this in the storyline is to find an obvious and easy "sync point" in both related clips. The "out" clip should be layered over the "in" clip. You can move the clip over the storyline by selecting it and typing command-option up-arrow (a gap will replace it's position in the storyline).

Select one of the clips and move the playhead to the point you want to line up and type M to set a marker.

Select the other clip and move the playhead to its line-up point and type M and set a marker.

The markers should be attached to the specific individual clips.

Turn on snapping (or hold down the N key if snapping is off) and move the upper clip in the direction to line up the two markers. They should snap (and you'll see a vertical yellow line drawn through both markers)

Trim the upper clip like you want it, select the entire clip and type command-option down-arrow to move it back down into the storyline. Select what's left of the gap and delete it.

If you need to "fine tune" the markers for lining up the sync points, double click on the marker and while the popup is open, you can type Control - , (comma) to "nudge" the marker to the left or Control - . (period) to nudge the marker to the right. (nudging is by frames.) Repeat snapping.... etc...
