apple stocks widget not working
Over the last few days, the stock widget just displays blanks. Anyone else have this issue or know what to do about it?
Thanks

Hi there,
I just got off the phone with Apple Support after having the same issue. It appears that certain ticker symbols have been causing all stock quotes to fail to appear. For instance, the stock tickers VTSAX and VFFVX (shown along with the DOW JONES and NASDAQ indexes below) have been appearing with green boxes instead of quotes.
However, when I removed VTSAX and VFFVX, both the DOW JONES and NASDAQ indexes began to work:
Apple Support confirmed that the issue was not specific to my computer, as their test computers were also experiencing the same symptoms. The representative I spoke to forwarded this issue to the developer so they should now be aware.

Thanks for doing the legwork. I would say several if not all Vanguard ticker symbols are causing a problem. Once I removed them, the widget functioned properly.
I removed all of the entries for any mutual funds I was tracking and now the widget works correctly. I tried re-adding those same funds, and it caused the problem to return, so it would seem the solution is to remove mutual funds for now until Apple fixes the issue.
FWIW: I threw out all my prefs associated with Dashboard, and the widget prefs associated with Stocks, restarted, and now with only the Apple default stocks, the widget still shows only blanks. So mutual funds are not the only cause IMHO. I find it interesting that the chart screens and other data in the lower panels still update.
It would appear that multiple stocks -- not just mutual funds -- are suffering from the same issue. Remove all stocks quotes except for the DOW JONES and NASDAQ indexes, and you will at least be able to see the two indexes.
Here's my experience as of 08-07-2013 --
This lineup works:
DOW J
NASDAQ
AAPL
GOOG
BAC
GME
But adding a single over-the-counter stock, SOBS, does this:
I know I can change to another widget, but I'd prefer if this one worked.

I don't like "me too" posts without adding extra info, so this may help shed some light on things. It's been a week since I wrote in about the Vanguard ticker symbols seeming to be the culprits in my case. As of today, my widget is still working correctly with these symbols: MO, PM, KO, T, VZ, WM, GIS, LQMT, and PG. I haven't tried adding the Vanguard symbols in since they update only at the end of the day anyway.
"Me too." When I removed all of the following, the rest of the stocks and indexes updated and worked as usual. If I added a single one of these symbols back in, the problem was triggered.
FBGRX
FDCAX
FUSEX (I know, right?)
NMPAX
Remove any m utual funds and it then operates fine. Don't know what the problem is with mutual funds.
Thanks. WIll try and remove DOw and NASDaq. Disappointing that AAPL needs to go as well. It seems like a useless widget if all these basics make it fail.
Any ideas on why apple movies widget fails as well?
Well I removed our mutual funds and the stocks showed their prices. As soon as I added mutual funds they all went to green boxes. Weird. DOW J is okay. But movies worked at Apple store but not at home.
I have it working on my old 2008 MBP but not my rMB. I installed a Fidelity widget instead.
I saw that on the list but it says my security preferences will not let me download it only from app store. How can I unlock that for the download?
You need to go into preferences, security & privacy, general and change allow "apps downloaded from anywhere". You can change back to only apple aps after you download the Fidelity widget.
Hope that helps.
Thanks. Will try and see if it takes the mutual funds which Apples no longer does.
