Ipad mini screen cracked by itself

I used my ipad mini for 20 mins as usual and then placed it down on my breakfast bar. A few minutes later I heard a faint cracking sound and saw the screen break from a point at the top edge where it joins the casing. It looks as if something has fallen on it, but that is catagorically not the case. I have got nowhere in talking with Apple about this via email and phone several times over the past few days, they in effect are saying that they don't believe me and this is accidental damage. For me its not the money, it is the principle, and having spent very substantial sums on Apple products (macbooks, iphones, ipads etc) over the years I don't feel like I am being treated as a valued customer. I'm now likely to stop buying Apple products, whereas a warranty replacement costing Apple very little in the context of the several thousend £ I have spent over the years would have resulted in a satisfied customer and a strong advocate of Apple customer care. I wondered if there are other people who have had a similar experience with screens cracking spontaniously?User uploaded file

Not accusing you of anything. However, I've worked with electronic devices for decades, and have seen a lot of screen breakage on everything from CRTs to iPhones and iPads. That includes impact breakage and glass defects (yes it does happen, but quite infrequently). That breakage pattern is very unlikely to be the result of a defect in the glass and appears, just based on the evidence you have presented (your photo), to be the result of an impact. Aside from consulting your insurance company as turingtest2 suggests, you might try a trip to an Apple Store and talk with someone in person. Perhaps it appears a little different to the naked eye.

It really is just a point of principle with me; I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to replace the ipad screen - it seems to be about £100, or there are even do-it-yourself kits for under £40, and I could as suggested make a claim on my home insurance - but the fact is that this screen shattered before my own eyes. The market is acutely competative with windows 8 tablets now starting to be interesting options, and the premium for a high end mac book is still significant. I need to buy laptops for my daughters to use at college, my wife needs a new PC, I've been wondering whether to look at (for example) a Samsung or Sony phone next time I upgrade. Putting all this together I'm starting to feel that I'm not so as a customer anymore to Apple, and instead of spending a further £2k or more with Apple on these things without a second thought I'm now going to really look at the options. Shame really - for what is in effect a $50 screen Apple seem happy to loose a lot of business.

If you do it yourself you will void the warranty and any further suppoert from Apple,so if that is OK ,go ahead

or take it to an Apple Retail Store genius bar and let the technical guys see it and you will then get a definitive answer

Hint if you do,these guys are human try not taking the attitude in to the store with you

You really need to take the Mini to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs look at it. I would have to agree with James Ward that the damage pattern is not the kind that is produced by spontaneous fracture. Had an automobile windshield do that and the failure was from a point on the edge propogating as a single line. Spontaneous failure has to have a stress point to cause the initiation of the failure. As an engineer I find it hard to believe a failure can occur spontaneously with that kind of fine splintering...that is a result seen from an impact of some sort.

But do take it to an Apple store genius bar and have it examined, get an official reading on it.

As given we're simply fellow users here. Irrespective of your account of what happened I suspect that Apple has to deal with a large number of essentially fraudulent claims for warranty replacement. While taking a quick search online for any evidence that this might be a rare, but acknowledged issue, what I actually ran into was threads where people who had damaged their devices were encouraged to visit the store and lie. With this in mind it is likely that occasionaly a genuine claim will be dismissed. I'm sure you can't, but you shouldn't take it personally.

Honestly, no one here can help you, other than to point out what is obvious from the information you have posted. And frankly no one here really cares about threats to buy products from someone than Apple. It makes absolutely no difference to us what you buy. The only recourse left for you is to take it in to an Apple store where a representative of the company can have a look first hand.

What did you do? Did you take it to the Apple store and what did they say/do about it?

No one will question your veracity, but it helps to hear what the end result was for this. Spontaneous cracks are pretty unusual, but they do occur. User had one recently with the display on a MacBook Pro Retina, so they happen.

Did you go to the DC store or one in MD, like Bethesda or Montgomery Mall?
