Ipad mini screen cracked by itself

I used my ipad mini for 20 mins as usual and then placed it down on my breakfast bar. A few minutes later I heard a faint cracking sound and saw the screen break from a point at the top edge where it joins the casing. It looks as if something has fallen on it, but that is catagorically not the case. I have got nowhere in talking with Apple about this via email and phone several times over the past few days, they in effect are saying that they don't believe me and this is accidental damage. For me its not the money, it is the principle, and having spent very substantial sums on Apple products (macbooks, iphones, ipads etc) over the years I don't feel like I am being treated as a valued customer. I'm now likely to stop buying Apple products, whereas a warranty replacement costing Apple very little in the context of the several thousend £ I have spent over the years would have resulted in a satisfied customer and a strong advocate of Apple customer care. I wondered if there are other people who have had a similar experience with screens cracking spontaniously?
