Macbook Air SSD failure?

I've had my MBA for just under a year, and the SSD failed today. I saw the dreaded white screen. I took it into an Apple store, and they are having to replace the SSD. Unfortunately, they didn't have the one I need in stock. So, it will be a few days. I'll be lost without my MBA. LOL

Has anyone else had issues with SSD failure on MBA? I hope this is not a common issue. Luckily, it is still under warrants. The part was about $800.

Hello guys, I am here again.

I sent my macbook air to service provider in Slovakia, they told me that this is SSD failture and new SSD 128GB from Toshiba will be 550EUR. SO I bought yesterday external 120 SSD disk LaCie USB 3.0 with thunderbolt.

I tried to install OS X to this external SSD and what happens? It working the same way like install to internal "crashed" drive. = System is freezing, crashing after 5 seconds from startup like booting from internal SSD but this is external drive, can you try this like me ? What is your opinion? I am very unhappy with this... 200€ for external SSD, 20 EUR for delivery to the service and from the service and macbook still not working. 😠 😢

So I guess it´s not only SSD crashed inside...but what it is? I don´t want to send it to the service station and spend another money for nothing...

Thanks.

I am from Slovakia as well...had the same problem...My MBA was repaired for free but I have the same SSD type which is Toshiba...the best thing is to call Apple support (UK), tell them what has happened to you, mention that you are not the only case...that you expected that MBA is going to work for a longer period of time...that it is expensive...and that it is impossible for SSD to fail after so short time of use...Be polite...because they are polite too, ask them what you should do about it. I brought my to mzone which is not an authorized service here in Slovakia...but then I called the apple support...the process was little bit complicated but it was my fault coz I did not know that the authorized service is CCC computers...they have a database...so if you are going to be an exception ( as I was), they will post to the database that your repair is for free...but you have to bring your MBA to CCC computers...Try that and you will see 🙂 I hope that it will help 🙂

As an update - I now have *second* replacement ssd courtesy of Apple (no charge) for my 15 month old 11" Air and, God help me, it's a Toshiba again!

I guess I'll keep time machine running hot and send the machine back for another drive when this one fails :-)

Original drive lasted 12 months and two weeks

1st replacement drive lasted 2 months

2nd replacement drive 3 days and counting...

Cheers,
Mark.

update

I spend 2 days to go to the Apple Store in Chengdu(China) to get Genius Bar appointment. The guy is very nice and helpful, he tested the Mac , and only found problem in the SSD. He checked his iPad and found the cost is about 3600 CNY(- -#), but he left 5 minutes and came back told me there's no ssd available that I need to wait for two weeks, and the reparation should be free of charge! But they will still replace it with To-sh1t-bah ssd, but with new firmware.

Now I am waiting, hope the "should be free of charge" can be sure no charge! Toshiba is okay with me, as long as no charge, I will install software to notice me don't use the ssd more 90% space to avoid the problem. Maybe someday apple will update firmware which can fix it, or they will call those ssds back.

Btw, I bought the Mac md231 in The US, I hope the email from apple can help you guys.

I'm don't think that these failures necessarily have anything to do with filling the drive up and hindering the wear leveling. My second drive (dead after 2 months) was only 53% full when it died. I'm guessing that the master table thingy (that tracks the cells) got trashed somehow and that was it - kaput.

I have boot rom version MBA51.00EF.B02

SMC: 2.4f19 (which is the latest I think for an 11").
