Midi notes hanging with Logic X

Hi all. I am new to this, so please be gentle :-)

I have an AMT8 Midi interface (from Emagic). I have a keyboard that is connected to the interface, and subsequently into my iMac.

Since installing the new Logic X, the midi notes are getting stuck (hanging). This is when I am using a software instrument within Logic.

I find that I have to turn off the midi interface (or hit the panic button) to stop the hanging notes. Sometimes there is no sound until I again restart the interface.

I also have Logic 9, and I have never had this problem, all works fine.

Does anybody have any experience of this, or any advice?

Cheers,

CCan you make sure you have the latest version of the AMT8 driver installed? you might want to use an App named MiIDI Monitor to check where the hanging notes come from.

I had the same problem with my external synth modules when I switched from LOGIC 9 to X. I googled for hours to no avail and tried to uninstall and reinstall MOTU drivers etc. It drove me mad. But then I read in a MOTU forum thread (which wasn't Logic- but Mavericks-related) NOT to connect your MIDI interface (mine is a MOTU micro lite) directly to the USB ports of your mac (in my case a 2012 i7 Mac Mini) but instead to connect the MIDI interface via a self powered USB hub. I tried that out with an old Belkin hub for the early Mac Minis and it magically works! Don't ask me why- I am no technician. Perhaps it works for you, too.

So, anyone figure this out yet? I know it is not my MIDI hardware (MOTU Express) as I can see Logic sending out random notes to my midi system! When I hit record, it will send out a sustain note that is not recorded, but goes the whole time I'm playing / recording midi. Also, when I first launch Logic is sends out a sustain that even a full midi reset in Logic will not stop! This happens even if I start and empty Logic project, as an audio only with no midi environment at all! None of my other midi apps have issues with my setup! THIS IS A LOGIC ISSUE, and I hope someone has figured out what the deal is! (Right now, as I type this I'm listening / watching Logic send a C0 0 to 127 loop, as if an arpeggiator was on... but I haven't setup anything and this is a new "audio" project!

My logic version is 10.1.0, on Yosemite (although it also did this in Mavericks), running the latest Motu drivers etc!

Help please!

Thanks in advance!!!

Feb 6, 2015 12:49 PM in response to MidiMusicMaker

It's likely not a Logic issue..... otherwise a lot more people would have see/reported this issue and that's simply not the case...

Note:

I know it is not my MIDI hardware (MOTU Express)

Have you installed the new Beta drivers for the 128 that Motu released a few days ago to resolve some weird issues with Yosemite and 10.1?

serve.motu.com/testing/MIDI/150107/MOTU%20MIDI%20Installer%2064820.zip

There is a large thread here about this known issue....

Logic Pro X Hanging Notes with Motu Express 128

Feb 6, 2015 2:08 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

I'm fairly certain Logic has something to do with it! First off, as I stated in my post, Midi works fine with other apps, and Apple's own "Audio Midi Setup" utility works fine with my setup. For the record, I can see Logic SENDING random signals at first startup, and when I hit record (if you go to the display mode "custom" you can see all incoming and outgoing signals). When I hit record it throws out a random sustain burst that triggers all midi devices attached, also at Logic startup. This happens even if no Midi environment has been setup, so Logic is firing midi commands even with no Midi environment! I can literally see it firing the output, with no other input or routing. Also to note, after I have recorded a Midi track, Logic plays it back correctly, and the random note that was fired during the initial record event is not recorded, or played back. It's just there as an annoyance while you track, then gone.

I have not tried the Beta drivers, being as the current drivers work on everything else I don't see that being an issue. I have tried new USB hubs (all high quality), Thunderbolt USB output, main computer USB output, you name it... same issue in Logic only. Also, this problem has persisted despite Logic updates, O.S. updates, new Midi hardware etc. And the only time I have issues is when Logic is in the mix. Otherwise all Midi routing and control works flawlessly. Logic fits in this problem somehow, I'm just hoping someone with a fix can hop on here!!!

(There are plenty of reports of this issue... the fix seems to be the elusive part here!)

Feb 6, 2015 4:17 PM in response to MidiMusicMaker

I'm fairly certain Logic has something to do with it!

Of course Logic has something to do with it but the issue lies in the current Motu drivers as explained by Motu..... It's not a bug in Logic.. It's likely because Logic Pro X recently dropped support for some of the older legacy SDK's which possibly the Motu drivers for the 128, relied upon in some way, hence the issue...

so Logic is firing midi commands even with no Midi environment!

Its not Logic 'firing off midi notes ...' as you described it... otherwise everyone would see this issue.. It only affects those using the Motu 128..... as I have tried to explain and is described in the link I provided...

I have not tried the Beta drivers, being as the current drivers work on everything else I don't see that being an issue.

The point of the new beta drivers from Motu is to resolve the issue with their drivers and Logic and OS X.... If you choose not to use them then you will not possibly resolve the issue you have currently.

(There are plenty of reports of this issue... the fix seems to be the elusive part here!)

Again, see the thread I linked to, in my previous post....

Feb 6, 2015 9:08 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

I do appreciate the link to the other post. I had run across it before, unfortunately it really isn't the issue I'm facing. (I'm on an older MacMini 2011, i7 with USB 2.0 ports only (not the USB 3 models which people there were commenting on). They also seem to be having a different issue of hangs during playback etc. I don't have those issues, I have a startup, and record start, issue of Logic sending "Note On" codes that were not ordered!))

Also for reference I don't have a Motu Express 128, I have the Micro Express with the added TimeCode features. I'm not sure what difference, if any, this makes but it is the latest offering from Motu and should be rock solid!!!

Okay, so I tried the Beta drivers. Same exact problem persists. When I launch, this is what "Midi Monitor" gives me:

20:54:06.826To Micro Express USB Port 2SysExUniversal Non-Real Time 6 bytesF0 7E 00 06 01 F7

Notice, Logic is reversing the signal order by sending the "Note Off", then sending "Note On"! Also notice the Micro Express sends no data initiating this issue. Seems like a Logic bug to me! I wonder if there is a way to scrip a second "Note Off" function to kill the problem Logic is initiating? It would be a bandaid but better than manually killing the process!

Feb 6, 2015 9:50 PM in response to MidiMusicMaker

Well, that's a big difference I misunderstood....... that you have a Micro and not a 128 so...

Please do the following and lets have a look at what is going on....

Download Etrecheck from here...

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

..and then launch Logic Pro and load up a project...

Now run Etrecheck and post up the full report here....

Thanks...

Just a quick glance through as i am busy in the studio this weekend but.....

As I suspected... You probably have conflicting midi drivers installed...

You have some older Roland drivers installed.. for your Integra?

Try uninstalling them and then test....

The midiserver installed has also crashed....

Feb 6, 2015, 10:52:05 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/MIDIServer_2015-02-06-105205_[ redacted].crash

Again, this is symptomatic of an issue with a Midi driver installed... and could easily explain the particular issue you are having.....

You are also having some hardware related crashes too....

Feb 1, 2015, 10:28:06 AM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Kernel_2015-02-01-102806_[redacted].panic [Click for details]

Also the Prodataum drivers/software are causing crashes too... (Some stuff for Proteus or Ensoniq gear?)

Feb 6, 2015, 11:10:04 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/prodatum_2015-02-06-111004_[re dacted].crash

Again this is going to be another midi related issue and again, could easily be the cause of your problems....

Cleaning up all this.... should get you on the right path at least..

Finally, it wouldn't do any harm to clean out all the extra old drivers for Wireless gear you have installed.... if you are no longer using them... Novatel, Sierra, SmithMicro VW, LGE and so on... plus the Pantech stuff too...

Feb 7, 2015 2:06 PM in response to The Art Of Sound

Thanks for looking it over... I wish the problem were just a driver issue... if only. I say this because I just purchased the Integra-7, and the drivers you see are the latest Yosemite 10.10.x drivers from Roland. (There are only three Midi Drivers on my system, that I can see. The two Roland drivers, and the Motu driver. The Logic X note hang issues has been a problem ever since I started trying to use Logic X with Midi over a year ago... long before the Roland drivers were installed.) Up unit the Integra-7, several weeks ago, only the Motu driver was on my system!

Apple's Midi server has occasionally crashed, during my initially Midi setup (it seemed the "adding devices" function would accasionally fight with Motu "Clockworks" if they were both open at the same time during configuration. It maybe crashed on me twice?). After I set everything up, it hasn't crashed since... to my knowledge. (Unless Logic X crashes it and restarts it on initial Logic X launch? I haven't seen any system notifications of this though.)

The Prodataum software is a midi program controller for my E-MU gear. It crashed once, on initial setup (also while Logic X was running in the background) but hasn't crashed since and is working great currently. I'm guessing Etrecheck is pulling crash logs, which you would want to check, but both the crash logs you're seeing were one off, not really a common occurrence. By the way, Prodataum is also a very recent install, I just started setting it up yesterday, and all the Logic X sustain note, over midi, have been present even back when I had a very simple midi setup (two keyboards and the Motu Micro Express)!

Feb 7, 2015 3:08 PM in response to MidiMusicMaker

Okay...

A few quick questions/comments..

1) Did you run Midi Monitor without LPX running and did you look for generated data like you saw in your previous post. Also test with Garageband if you have it installed along with another DAW (given you said it doesn't affect other apps) if you can... and again, watch for similar self-generated data issues...

2) Have you actually spoken with Motu support? They are really helpful once you get past the initial "Please install/re-install/reset/unplug" stage

Midi works fine with other apps,

3) Which apps specifically on this same Mac?

4) Although you didn't say so specifically, that I can find.. I assume you have already trashed both Logic's prefs and the CS files... If not, please do so and test again...

  1. Quit Logic Pro
  2. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  3. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  4. Press the Go button.
  5. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  6. If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.

I have a M-Audio Keystation 88, and using Logic Pro X 10.2 and since about 3 days ago I am experiencing hanging notes very often too.

my system;

iMac 27 ´ (mid 2010) 16 Gb Ram

I use OS X 10.9.5 and midi keyboard is connected with a USB cable.

Have been using this for a few months and NEVER had a problem before, not even once.

I installed the Mackie surface controller recently, after one of the functions buttons stopped responding properly on my keyboard. Perhaps that´s the problem ...

Don´t know how to remove it, as I right click and select delete the Mackie surface controller, but it doesn´t seem to delete it.

Dear all,

I'm experiencing the same problems. I have an Imac 27", mid 2011. 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7

I use OS X 10.10.5

I use it with a Casio CDP-120, connected with a USB. I do not have any problems with this keyboard in logic 9, or in other midi modules. But iin Logic X, the notes are stuck as soon as I play the keyboard.

Best,

Sanne

Same issue--was running fine two days ago--now notes are hanging crazy like I am in St. Paul's Cathedral. I have an Akai MPK Mini, which is great for on the road work. Logic has had an upgrade this past week, and I think there lies my problem. Fortunately I have a backup controller that does work with Logic so I am not burned for now. I'd like to get this sorted as the Akai is a great little board couples with Logic X. Anyone find anything on this?
