Help for Mac Pro Model A1186

I need help to buy the good componant to upgrade my MacPro and Apple product are specific for each configuration.

So if i don't buy the good part, it won't work.

I have allready purchased a power supply, thinking it's the good one, but my macpro don't start, because this PSU don't deliver the right power for the motherboard.

My target motherboard model is 630-7951.

You can find your motherboard model written on a white stick, at the upper right side of your motherboard, just above of the upper pci slot.

If you have same motherboard, can you please :

  • tell me what is the brand and type of your CPU.Just type this command on your terminal, and report me the result : sysctl -n machdep.cpu.brand_string
  • Tell me what is the model number of you Power Unit.
    This require you :
  • Open your case
  • remove your CD/DVD tray (easy to do. Just pull up and detach the cable
  • remove the PS cable cover, under the CD/DVD tray (2 screw)
  • remove the PSU unit

  • I join pictures to explain how to do that :

    1. Remove CD TrayUser uploaded fileUser uploaded file
    2. Remove power supply.pdf

    Thank's Kaz-K.

    You're right.

And you show me that i made a mistake when i wrote my post !!! 😕

My tartget motherboard model isn't 630-7951. It's my current one.

It's a Mac Pro 2,1 motherboard. If so, following PSU suits your mother board.

CPU is Intel Xeon Woodcrest and Chipset is Intel 5000X as far as I know.

My target motherboard model is 630-7997. It's the early 2008 A1186 model, with EFI64.

Hope you can help me to find the good answer.

    Regards.

    Hi Kaz-k

I've tried this PSU (661-4677) with my new motherboard (630-7997), but it didn't work.

The macpro start and stop in half a second. seem this PSU don't deliver enough power.

Look at this page to understand what i try to do :

    http://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=a1186

My current macpro is the 3rd one (Mac Pro "Eight Core" 3.0 (2,1). It's the model No EMC 2138 (EFI32).

As i owned two 3.0 GHz Q. Core Xeon E5472 x2, what i try to obtain is 2nd one (Mac Pro "Eight Core" 3.0 (2008)), define as model No EMC 2180 (EFI64).

Except if i've made a mistake, the motherbord 630-7997 was designed for the EMC 2180.

If i'm wrong, do you know the right motherboard part number ?

The link you provided specified that the PSU unit 661-4677 is for EMC No 2138.

It seemed there are many wrong informations on the web, and Apple maintain the confusion about part number.

That why i'd like somebody take a look inside his computer for the Apple model product number written on the PSU unit of a macpro with 630-7997 motherboard.

Does your macpro is build with this particular motherboard ?

    Regards.

Yes all PSU deliver 980W, but not in the same way.

Here is the wire power distribution for the 614-0383 PSU :

That's why, even with Apple, you need to buy the right PSU for the right combinaison of Motherboard/CPU.

And the only way for me to be sure to buy the right PSU is to obtain the information from an owner of the the 630-7997 logicboard, with 2.8 Ghz or 3 Ghz Q. Core Xeon E5472.

And you should know that, to avoid their customers successfully upgrade computers, Apple part number written on the product are different from Apple part number written in the maintenance guide.

Example : For my current Macpro (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-eight-core-3.0-specs .html ), PSU describe on maintenance guide is 661-4309 part number. But Part number written on the product is 614-0407 !!!

All the wires into the computer are black. So you can't identify power distribution.

So to buy the good one, i need to know the part number written on the PSU of my target configuration (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-eight-core-3.0-2008- specs.html)

    Hi.

I wrote many mails to them (3 since your anwser), but no response at all.

is there an owner of a A1186 EMC 2180 Macpro (the early 2008 8 core 3 Ghz) who can give me some informations ?

Just a quick look inside for the motherboard reference (upper right corner, neralthe pci bus)

and the answer to this script : sysctl -n machdep.cpu.brand_string

This will be a good first step

    Thank's for any help
