US carriers are not very friendly when it comes to prepaid plans. AT&T does not offer a prepaid SIM for the iPhone. Your best bet is to check with T-Mobile.
I have not ever actually used them, but I've heard of travellers using Straight Talk pre-paid SIMs in iPhones (although maybe not iPhone 5). They are an MVNO (a mobile virtual network operator, actually associated with TracFone as the parent company - they use both AT&T's network and T-Mobile's, varies around the country). You can pick up a straight talk SIM at any WalMart store.
Now that StraightTalk is a supported CDMA carrier, they no longer allow iPhones on their pre-paid GSM service.

Then they need to update their online unlimited GSM SIM pre-paid ordering informatio?
From the straight talk BYOP web site:
Bring your own GSM or CDMA compatible phone
If your phone is an unlocked GSM phone, make sure it operates on our compatible frequencies
(850 and 1900 MHz).
Nowhere on there or during the ordering process for an unlimited plan SIM is there any mention (for or against), any specific unlocked GSM phone make or model.
They do have caveats about bringing CDMA phones (so no Sprint or Verizon phones planning on use the GSM slot in those) - any unlocked GSM phone only need be compatible with AT&T or T-Mobile.
As I said, I've never used Straight Talk, but if they are dis-allowing specific phones, they need to make that plain on the web site. If I can get all the way to checkout without finding any mention of any banned devices, then I'd know I'd be dang p'o'd if they later told me I could not use my device.
I guess their page is a little out of date...
Can you actually order a MicroSIM or NanoSIM?
Seems microSIM yes, nano, seems not (but then I've blocked so many cookies from their annoying web site now, I'm not sure its working quite right). Amazon lists regular and microSIMs for them, but no nanoSIMs.
It may be that they just need to update their info, but you'd think they would get on top of that before anyone gets around to filing complaints with their State about misleading retail practices. They don't list any of the phones they actually sell as being disallowed from the BYOP GSM plans?
Considering it's a phone company that's owned by Wal*Mart, I'm not surpirsed...
