All I can tell you is that it takes a fair amount of force to damage the aluminum case like that. It does not happen under normal use.

If you know for a fact that nobody dropped the computer, then somebody had to have dropped something reasonably heavy (and hard) on the power connector while it was plugged into your computer. Possibly a large book or something like it.

I have to disagree. With all that scarring inside the jack, it is possible for moisture to corrode it if it gets too close to it. I really would get that thing repaired, or replaced. Thankfully, you can always get the hard drive pulled out and buy a refurbished model for less.

And I agree, carrying it in a bag filled with books is not wise. Aluminum can bend. It is better to carry it in notebook bag that has some form of matted protection. The other thing to be careful of, is not to leave the power cord plugged in during transit. It is safer held inside a ziplock bag. Also make sure the power cord is NOT wrapped around the L shaped parts of the brick that pull out. Unfortunately that can get the cable so close that it frays where it goes into the brick.

It won't get any worse if you don't carry it in a bag full of books.

No one here can know if your damage will get worse. Check w/your homeowners/rental insurance for accidental damage coverage. If you purchased your MBP w/a cc, check w/them to see if you are covered for accidental damage to electronics.
