Is it still possible to set up a hotmail account in Mail?

Is it still possible to set up a hotmail account in Mail?

I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.8.4 and Mail 6.5 installed.

I have done all the procedure but it does not work for my Hotmail.com nor for my Libero.it accounts.

I got it to work with my yahoo.com.au account.

I there a reason for that?

Thanks for any assistance.

Here are the settings for Hotmail.

  • Windows Live Hotmail POP password: Your Windows Live Hotmail password
  • Windows Live Hotmail POP port: 995
  • Windows Live Hotmail POP TLS/SSL required: yes

  • Windows Live Hotmail SMTP server address: smtp.live.com
  • Windows Live Hotmail SMTP user name: Your complete Windows Live Hotmail email address ("me@hotmail.com" or "me@live.com" for instance)
  • Windows Live Hotmail SMTP password: Your Windows Live Hotmail password
  • Windows Live Hotmail SMTP port: 587

Unfortunately that's correct (and mainly a Microsoft problem)

On mobile devices Microsoft e-mail systems (Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com etc) support ActivSync, unfortunately the wizards at Microsoft decided that POP was good enough for everything else (except Outlook 2013 on Windows, which will sync)

MS are as ever impossible to understand.

Look on the bright side, it works just as MS intend it too.

You could forward the Hotmail to Yahoo, then you would have a synchronized inbox containing Hotmail and Yahoo mail, or you could toss Hotmail away and get a more flexible email provider, basically anyone else really.

Once you have established that your Hotmail account in the Apple Mail app is working properly then here's a suggestion. If you want to get all the thousands of emails in your Hotmail web-based account downloaded so that they are then in the inbox of your Apple Mail, first log into your web-based account and, if necessary, move all the emails you are interested in to your inbox. Then mark all of them as "unread", you can do this in bulk in a similar manner to deleting them in bulk by clicking on the box at the top of the list of emails.

Now here's the bit that you might not want to do...... Delete the Hotmail account in the Apple Mail app and re-create it. This new account should (I think) then see all the emails as new ones and download them. I said "I think" because I haven't tested this on an Apple account but it works for a Windows one. Maybe other contributors to this forum might comment on this suggestion before you try it. If it works then it would be a lot easier than anything else I can think of to get all your email download to the Apple Mail app - a few emails could be forwarded but thousands is a major task.

I have just tried it with my iPad and it worked fine; messages on the web-based mail and marked "unread" were downloaded and the messages on the web-based mail being set to "read". For Csound1, my iPhone ignored the messages marked as unread and which it had previously downloaded so it looks like you have to delete and recreate the account for it to work.

Rats! You are absolutely right - I hadn't noticed that when I created the Hotmail account on my iPad that it was ActiveSynch, I assumed that it would be the same as on my iPhone which I think is POP. Nevertheless, it' s worth istevan giving it a try - if it works, he gets all his emails, if it doesn't, he is no worse off.

Your iPhone should also be ActivSync, it runs the same OS as the iPad. I agree that it is worth a try, I'd just try with a small number of emails first, 6000 can take a while to succeed, as well as fail.

My bluetooth shows my mouse as connected but it does not respond ...

So I use the keypad, click on the icon to disconnect the mouse but it does not work ...

The only think i can do is restart the pc

Is there a way to "force close" bluetooth?

This has happened a few times already ...

I have found a few treads about this problem but no solution ...

I have just added the muse as favourite following the advice of a tread that was pointing here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21371?viewlocale=en_US

but i still cannot tell if it works as it is a problem that accurs randomly ...

Thanks

Take the battery out of the mouse, once it is out try and disconnect from the menu. Delete the pairing and remove the mouse from Devices. Then reconnect using the wizard (open Bluetooth preferences, new devices will be searched for) Make sure the mouse is discoverable.

Oh, put the battery back in before reconnecting 🙂

I did try the battery trick before and it does not work ...

I still cannot either disconnect the mouse nor close Bluetooth when this happens ...

The only way is to restart the PC.

I think that the problem may be that I have two MacBook Pro and two mice ...

Both mice are paired with both mac ... so i guess that sometimes they may conflict ...

I have tried the "favoritism" option for now ...

If it does not work I will try to un-pair them so that one mouse is paired with only one Mac ...

But this will take a few days to be tested ...

I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks for now.

Re my e-mail sinc issue ... I am in the process of setting up a gmail account!

I will then try to connect my Hotmail account to the gmail one ...
