My MacBook Air (2013) won't turn on

This morning I was using it, and it was working fine. I came home this evening, plugged my MacBook into the MagSafe power adapter and went to power it on - and nothing happened. It is responding to the power adapter (ie lights up green initially and the orange) but I cannot get it to respond. At one stage I did hear a brief chime as if it was rebooting, but it cut off again.

I have tried everything I can find online - holding down the power button, holding down power, option and command, etc but nothing is working. I have only owned this laptop for a couple of months and I cannot think of anything that would have damaged it. As I say, it as working this morning.

I am desperate for help as I am currently abroad and not near an Apple Store and my laptop is essential for the work I am doing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, yes, I have tried but despite hearing a chime I simply cannot get it to 'wake up' - no matter what keys I hold down, the screen is black, I see no apple logo.

It is unfortunate that there is no Apple store nearby.

Try resetting SMC one more time.

Make sure that another outlet is used, left side keyboard keys are pressed and keys are pressed down

for about 20 seconds.

All 4 keys are released at the same time.

Then press the key for power.

Still nothing!

I have left it on charge and the light has gone from orange to green, indicating it is fully charged. Is there absolutely nothing else I can try?

Disconnect the computer from the power and try to turn it on.

If this does not help, you may have to wait until you are back home to get it fixed.

Okay interesting development - after carefully inspecting it for a while (turning it in my hand) the fans have powered on - very loudly. Still nothing else but what could this mean?!

Thermal sensors not working properly, probably.

Only Apple store can diagnose it correctly.

So today I took it out of the case just to try again, and bam! It turned on. Just like that. Very, very strange but I'm not complaining! Thank you for all of your help.

Did your MBA continue to work after it came back on? Mine did the same about two weeks ago (I've not had it longer than a month), and I was thrilled after a few days it magically powered up after nearly a week of nothing. But a few days ago it died and won't power up again. Light has changed from orange to green, tried every reboot I can find, called Apple, etc. I'm taking it in tomorrow, so I guess I'm just curious about what to expect. This seems to be a frequent occurrence among Air owners, from what I've read online...

Mine is doing. I had a MBA from 2010 that died this year. But it never had this problem. If it's happening to everyone that mean the product is defective . Apple needs to recall and extent people warranty on it. I don't think it's right for us to be stuck with brand new computer that just turns on and off whenever it pleased. This seems to be a known issue for this model and apple needs to fix it!

Am in the same situation, everything is dead, no lights chimes etc. Strange as this happened after an SMC update today.

I took my mid 2012 MBAir into the Genius bar and as expexted it was a battery issue. They just had to pop it out and back in again and all was good. So if you have a totally dead Air then be sure to try that. I don't have apple care on this machine but they will do this for free.

So much for the battery that can't be removed but we sacrifice to get our gadgets small right!

I am having the same issue. This happened after the latest system upgrade. I put it to sleep and its dead now. Any solution to this? Probably removing the battery could have some effect but I'm not sure if I will be able to remove it.

Yes take it in and get them to remove it and put it back, it took about 10mins. You probably did the update without being plugged into the power adaptor and that is what caused my problem I think.
