My MacBook Air (2013) won't turn on

Please read this whole thread, if you can. Several people, including me, have had luck with what amounts to a good shaking of the laptop. It's been more than 2 years since I had to do it, and the laptop still works (I'm typing on it now).

I last posted in this thread in January after my discovery that The Shake did indeed work - and it's been working ever since.

And my wife's 2015 (but brand new) MacBook Pro is doing the same thing - refusing to wake up. So we shook it - and it worked! So curse Apple for doing one thing wrong - probably in the software that's supposed to wake the computer up. But bless them for doing another thing wrong - not bolting everything down inside. If shaking works, that means something inside isn't screwed on tight and moves enough to somehow wake it up.

Either that, or they're using the iPhone design that lets you wake up the phone by shaking it. Maybe using it by mistake - because why should you have to shake a computer to wake it up? It's ridiculous. But thank god they're doing it because otherwise we'd all have computers in a coma.

One tip - all I've needed is one good sharp shake - not a kind of wiggling it around but a real jerky-type shake. Works every time.

Thermal sensors not working properly, probably.

Only Apple store can diagnose it correctly.

I tried everything listed in this thread and nothing worked. Then I finally figured it out. I held the computer in front of an air conditioner and cooled it right down. It then started immediately.

I took it to a repair shop. It was the battery. Cells were dying. Maybe thats why the shaking thing works for people.

Did you try OS X Recovery as I suggested previously ?????

If you heard a chime, then the Mac is powered up, it's just not passing it's startup diagnostics test.

It is unfortunate that there is no Apple store nearby.

Try resetting SMC one more time.

Make sure that another outlet is used, left side keyboard keys are pressed and keys are pressed down

for about 20 seconds.

All 4 keys are released at the same time.

Then press the key for power.

I took my mid 2012 MBAir into the Genius bar and as expexted it was a battery issue. They just had to pop it out and back in again and all was good. So if you have a totally dead Air then be sure to try that. I don't have apple care on this machine but they will do this for free.

So much for the battery that can't be removed but we sacrifice to get our gadgets small right!

This might not work for everyone, but, having the same problem, my solution instead of holding down the power button, etc., was to mash the keyboard with the palm of my hand while clicking around on the track pad...I basically carelessly pressed most of the keys, and Bam, reboot. I expect this won't be the last time I have to deal with this issue...

omg i acctually tried this and it worked all i did was open the mac book air and shook it and it booted up when i pressed the power button while shaking it... hmmm this is odd but kinda cool at the same time...

I tried everything and still didn't succeed. So I tried one last thing and it worked. I used a hairdryer , low heat level, around the macbook air. I decided to try that because It has been raining a lot last days and the humidity was high.

This worked for me this morning. Unplugged it. Half open. Shake like you mean it while holding the start button. Chime! Lights on now back to work.

I am having the same issue , I did send it to apple support for repair and it started working there and they did different check and said it was completely fine , but now it's now working again . How did you sort your issue out ? Is it because of the cold winter climate in U.K. ? I never had such issue before !
