Like Felito, my locked iPad was never synced to iTunes, so Texas Mac Man's instructions did not work. Apple gives the following instructions to completely restore your iPad (which will erase all contents):

  • Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  • Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
  • While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
  • Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  • iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

Note: I have a Windows computer with iTunes and it worked.

Disabled iPhones, usually caused by typing in the wrong passcode too many times, are a common occurrence. In this article we explain how to fix a disabled iPhone using iTunes (or iCloud). The iPhone has powerful built-in security measures, and one of these is designed to prevent brute-force attempts to bypass the passcode.

How to Fix iPad is disabled connect to iTunes Issue

If you forgot your passcode, or if a message says that your device is disabled, follow these steps to remove your passcode. If you enter the wrong passcode on an iOS device six times in a row, you’ll be locked out and a message will say that your device is disabled.

1. Back up the iOS device to Fix iPad is disabled connect to iTunes

The first thing you should try to unlock your disabled device is a simple iTunes backup.

  1. Connect your iOS device to your computer via USB and open iTunes.
  2. Select the device in the upper right-hand corner to display its properties in the main screen.
  3. Click on the “Back Up Now” button to start a sync
  4. Now You may be prompted to type in your password on your iOS device to start the sync because the device is locked.
  5. Once you have typed in your password, you can cancel the back up and start using your device.
  6. If this method to fix ipad is disabled connect to iTunes not work try below Methods.

The link in pap1405's post solved it for me. Here's what I did...

1) Connected my iPad to my laptop

2) Because iTunes wasn't recognizing it, I updated the driver for my iPad using the steps for a Windows PC here - Manually Update the Apple Mobile Device USB driver (near the bottom of the page)

3) Disconnected my iPad from my laptop

4) Shut down my iPad via holding down the Sleep/Wake button and using the slider to power it down

5) Opened iTunes

6) Connected my iPad to my laptop

7) Held down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for a good 20-30 seconds. During that time the Apple logo appeared on the screen like it was starting up. However, I kept both buttons pressed through that until the iPad shut off and came back on again. That's when the Recovery Mode popup showed in iTunes (rather than the one that asks if you want to allow the device to connect to your computer... then tells you to respond on your device... but you can't because your device is locked).

I hope this helps someone.

Some guy named King_Pequin is sending me 15-20 emails a day

No, I am not sending you any emails (for a start I have no idea what your email address is), if you are getting emails it's because you've said that you want them, it has nothing to do with me. Go to your account's profile and turn off emails e.g. click on your name top left (if logged in) and click Preferences on the popup (you might need to toggle emails on and off) - or this should take you straight there : https://discussions.apple.com/user-preferences!input.jspa

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes

Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.

I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).

Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:

1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.

2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.

3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.

4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).

5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.

6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.

7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.

8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.

If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

 Cheers, Tom 😉

Here is my solution (and it worked)!

DO THIS:

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Note: You are UPDATING not RESTORING (which deletes your data). This is for people who have not ever synced with the computer. Follow all the instructions that later appear on the screen. This will work if you remember your old passcode. If not, you are sincerely screwed.
