Like Felito, my locked iPad was never synced to iTunes, so Texas Mac Man's instructions did not work. Apple gives the following instructions to completely restore your iPad (which will erase all contents):

  • Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
  • Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
  • While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
  • Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  • iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

Note: I have a Windows computer with iTunes and it worked.

The link in pap1405's post solved it for me. Here's what I did...

1) Connected my iPad to my laptop

2) Because iTunes wasn't recognizing it, I updated the driver for my iPad using the steps for a Windows PC here - Manually Update the Apple Mobile Device USB driver (near the bottom of the page)

3) Disconnected my iPad from my laptop

4) Shut down my iPad via holding down the Sleep/Wake button and using the slider to power it down

5) Opened iTunes

6) Connected my iPad to my laptop

7) Held down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for a good 20-30 seconds. During that time the Apple logo appeared on the screen like it was starting up. However, I kept both buttons pressed through that until the iPad shut off and came back on again. That's when the Recovery Mode popup showed in iTunes (rather than the one that asks if you want to allow the device to connect to your computer... then tells you to respond on your device... but you can't because your device is locked).

I hope this helps someone.

the answer for this is simple. DO NOT RESET ANYTHING ON ITUNES. DO NOT EVEN CONNECT TO ITUNES AND DONT WORRY 🙂. everything will be fine. just do a hard reset. a hard reset is where you hold down your home button and your lock button until the iPad turns off and then hold it until it turns back on. I was freaking out about thirty seconds ago because my friend disabled it and i thought i would lose all my Notability Notes and unsaved photos. BUT i said let me just do a hard reset. and it turned back on. it will reset to "iPad is disabled try again in 60 minutes" which isn't nearly as bad as it being disabled forever. Simply do this, don't worry, and when the 60 minutes is up, MAKE SURE THE PASSWORD IS CORRECT or else it will be disabled again. have a great day guys 🙂

Here is my solution (and it worked)!

DO THIS:

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Note: You are UPDATING not RESTORING (which deletes your data). This is for people who have not ever synced with the computer. Follow all the instructions that later appear on the screen. This will work if you remember your old passcode. If not, you are sincerely screwed.

Disabled iPhones, usually caused by typing in the wrong passcode too many times, are a common occurrence. In this article we explain how to fix a disabled iPhone using iTunes (or iCloud). The iPhone has powerful built-in security measures, and one of these is designed to prevent brute-force attempts to bypass the passcode.

How to Fix iPad is disabled connect to iTunes Issue

If you forgot your passcode, or if a message says that your device is disabled, follow these steps to remove your passcode. If you enter the wrong passcode on an iOS device six times in a row, you’ll be locked out and a message will say that your device is disabled.

  3. Click on the “Back Up Now” button to start a sync
