This is an old post, but people still come here thinking they have a virus. We've all been told that an iPhone cannot get a virus. Wrong!
Usually, if you simply clear the temporary Internet files, things will start working again. I just fixed a 5S by doing this. The problem was that a web page asking the user to call a 1-800 number came up over and over and over and it refreshes every second or so and the user cannot use Safari (hmmm. Sounds like a virus doesn't it?).
Sounds like it BUT it is NOT. It is a script that may have been downloaded to Safari cache and it gets executed over and over again until you clear the scripts. Viruses are not that easy to get rid of. They stick to the system and requires system restore to remove permanently. I agree with you all internet connected devices including Apple devices can be infected but that is NOT a virus.
Another way of getting this problem is breaking into your wireless router (thru remote management). Instead of using DNS that belongs to your internet provider, the router uses bad guys DNS IP addresses. All internet traffic gets redirected to their web servers that serve malicious ads/scripts.
