My iPhone 4s suddenly cannot locate any wifi

Weird..my iPhone was working fine in the past year and all of a sudden yesterday, the phone is having serious problem locating any wifi, including the wifi at home. My iPad and MAC and two other laptops could connect just fine. I have already reset, turn-off and on again numerous times, but the problem still persists. This issue puzzles me. Or is this really an iPhone problem?

Hello there lemirotsirave,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I wanted to recomend this article named iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398.

I know you have restarted it many times so you can skip that part

  1. Be sure that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
  2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again.

If unable to do so, see this article.

  3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and indicate that they are connected to the Internet.

If not, refer to your network administrator or ISP for assistance.

  4. Restart your iOS device.
  5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected. Then tap > and Forget this Network. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network again.

Note: You will need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your desired network requires one.

  6. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and then on again2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
  7. Update your device to the latest version of software.
  8. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2.

For AirPort Base Stations, see this article for information about firmware updates.

If the issue persists after this, then I suggest this troubleshooting from near the bottom of the article.

Unable to locate a Wi-Fi network

  • Check to see if the network is available by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and choosing from the available networks listed there.

Note: It may take a few seconds for the Wi-Fi network name to appear.

  • Move closer to your wireless router ( access point) and attempt to locate the Wi-Fi network again.
  • If you do not see the network you would like to join, you may be attempting to connect to a hidden network. Learn how to join a hidden network.
  • Supported Wi-Fi configurations vary by iOS device model. Find out which standards your device supports3.
  • Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Note: This will reset all network settings including: previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords, recently used Bluetooth accessories, VPN and APN settings.

All the very best,

Sterling

Hi sterling,

First thanks for your reply. But I if I may, before I posted this query, I have already searched far in the net and I have already found what you have posted and done them also countless times, but to no avail.

As an additional note, I have never upgraded to IOS6. And the phone was ok with my home connection in fact for a year already. But last Aug 14th, the wifi connection went dead. Again, all other gadgets that I have here can locate and connect to my home network without any problem. I haven't dropped the phone either as I am a very careful person. I had the phone in a protective case since day 1.

Wow that's really weird...now it seemed some units have the same wi-fi expiration date? 😝 Well I haven't been to any Apple repair in my area. I don't know if this is a software or hardware issue until someone from Apple sees our posts, that is if they are really reading posts here. I have been reading the other posts in the other communities and it seemed many of us have the same problems. Well Apple should really be serious in handling Apple issues or they will surely loose a large chunk of the smart-phone market if they can't.

I have lost my wifi as well, but on October 25, 2013. Have done all of the above steps several times to no avail. I have upgraded my personal 4s to 7.0.3. My company who issues iPhones to employees for work phones has told everyone NOT to upgrade their work phones due to upgrade issues. Closest Apple store is an hour away for me. To repair they wanted a $199 hold on credit card or replace with similar 4s. Why do that when you can buy a new 5s for $199. This could be a way to sell more phones, issue updates which corrupt a percentage of market who then need replacement phones.

What Apple says about this issue is that it happens "in rare instances"

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559

What the heck Apple...can't you read a whole bunch of "Greyed Out" wifi problems posted in the communities and still you claim it happens in rare instances? This issue makes iPhone a dumb phone and not a smart phone anymore. If this issues is isolated, then not a hundred people should be experiencing this kind of problem. But no, I see lots of people with the same issue. And what does your Apple Care centers do, especially here in the Philippines? They say they cannot help those who beleived in Apple products and bought one. What these people can only say is that "sorry". The saddest part here is that, the problem in my iPhone 4S happened exactly a week after my warranty expired. Isn't that fun? This means iPhone hardwares only have a year of lifespan. #@$#%#@#$ after paying a huge amount of money, this is what Apple will give back to its customers. A bullcrap of aftersales experience.

I really hope Apple will look into this. After my experience, I am presonally campaigning my friends not to try Apple. Definitely Apple products are not money-worth.

It seemed Apple is not really dead serious in hearing out their customers. Countless posts were made in this forum about numerous problems and still no significant plan of action was heard from them. To make thing worse in my 4S unit, the wifi connectivity problem I had months ago produced more problems with the unit. Now the unit hangs whenever I try to open my phonebook, when I read SMS messages, when I tap the Settings icon. And to make things worst, there are times that I cannot be contacted thru phone call. This really frustrates me more as this #$#@@ unit is only a year and 6 months old and this piece of trash is not cheap. I am beginning to really think that Apple iPhones are waste of money. I really wish someone from this company would care enough to hear out people here. They only seem to care about sale, and money, money, money. Their aftersales service really $@^% big time!

This is a rare post where Apple has replied becasue no one else had. Apple does not normally reply to posts or read posts on here as it is a User based forum, they usually just edit posts when we report a post for violating the Terms and Conditions. They will hear you out if you contact them, but I would not use this forum to try to get your point across as it is pointless.

Check out this post if you do not understand's Apple role in this forum: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5011235

How to Contact Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/he57

There is also a 'Contact Us' option in the bottom right of every single screen here on these forums.

Good Luck!

The support link you provided really is useless to the point many find it frustrating. You can really never contact someone from Apple unless, as mentioned by mfs3168, you assure them a "$199 hold on credit card" thing. If you click the "Contact Us" link that you mentioned, it will just take you to the "Contacting Apple" page where you really can't find anything helpful.

So yes you are right, "Good Luck!" to anyone who'll try to contact Apple with their dilemma.
