Kernel Panic

I recently have had a few kernel panic situations. They seem to be related to memory. I had all the memory sticks changed to a "matched" set by OWC. I have 10Gb RAM. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and the REMBER test with no indication of a problem. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Two weeks have past. Still getting kernel pani crashes, even if I :

- removed and replaced all OWC RAM sticks;

- removed Apple OEM RAM sticks;

- unplugged WACOM tablet;

- did all tests available;

Called Apple and they now think it might have something to do with the mother board. Preliminary suggestion by them is the possibility of motherboard issue if the issue persists with new OS and no user data brought back.

That would also mean not reinstalling 3rd party applications so how am I supposed to work I don't know...

A minimal Mac OS only with Apple software and ujpdates on a newly formatted drive is called troubleshoot testing, not to have a full working system but as a means to diagnose the cancer's source and possible remedies.

And clone that. Going from that to using Setup Assistant and/or Migration Assistant or TimeMachine later to get a working system but not to muddy the waters - even a new test user account.

The problem has been resolved.

How? Why?

As is often the case with hardware/software problems, we might never really know.

After replacing RAM from OWC with new matched units and removing the Apple RAM originally installed. I got another KP crash.

Very discouraged.

Then someone suggested I remove my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. Something spotted on the last KP crash report. After removing the tablet, it seemed to solve the problem. After 24 hours, I reinstalled the Apple RAM. Still no KP crash. After a further 24 hours, I reinstalled the tablet, with a new driver, the latest available from Wacom.

It's been two days now. Working normally and smoothly.

How to explain? Anyway, it looks good.

Good info. While things have changed in the UI since you left this tip, it was enough to point me in the right direction in finding the source of several kernel panics a week on an otherwise stable Early 2008 Mac Pro that has been kept young and speedy with an SSD for the System drive.

In Yosemite's "About This Mac" window, there is now a Memory tab at the top which shows a rectangle representing each memory slot in the machine and the size of the memory module if present, or the word "Empty" if a slot is empty.

After I found the Memory tab with this visual of my memory modules/empty slots, I noted that one of my modules had the yellow warning sign graphic on it, which indicated that there were errors. After correctly guessing that the left column represented the top card and the right column represented the bottom card, I shut down and unplugged my machine, carefully removed both cards, removed the matched pair of memory modules which included the memory module that was throwing errors, then made necessary adjustments so that my remaining memory modules were arranged as prescribed in the documentation, put the cards back in the machine, and powered it back up to find no more errors showing in the Memory tab!

Hopefully that will be the end of my kernel panics for a while.
