I have owned my Mac Air for nearly 1.5 yrs and never had an issue, until yestrday.
I can download docx files from the internet no problem, but when I go to open them (after they have saved into my downloads folder) a pop-up window with "convert file from" appears? Alas I can not open any downloaded docx files from the internet/email etc! This is making work very difficult.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
docx: Office Open XML (also informally known as OOXML or OpenXML) is a zipped, XML-based file format
In your Mac,...right click on the DOCX files, > get info > at bottom choose MS Word to "open with"
if it works, choose "change all" in same location
Great suggestion, but unfortunately doesn't work....

usually that error indicates a corrupt file, however its unlikely from your info since it pertains to multiple files.
A quick test would be take one copied suspect file, and converting it to RTF (rich text format) and then opening up the RTF with Word.

known word files are still opening fine, yes.
only this one file or group of files wont open (possibly corrupt)
when you right click on this file and choose "get info", what type of file is it listed as listed next to "kind"
Been using MS word every day for 16+ years, I recall this error only once, and then on a PC, recall was a damaged file....seems likely that the specific document is damaged, or that the compatibility pack is broken.
Can you confirm the SOURCE for the files recheck their verity.

I am using an online education site known as edmodo for a uni subject, it is meant to enable 'us' the students and the teachers exchange notes, readings, assignments etc. I have had no issues up until now.
Other students have posted their reading responses online, I have downloaded these and they wont open. I then uploaded my docx file to the site (which opened perfectly well on my computer). As a test I downloaded my own file from the site, and presto, my file wouldn't open either!
Extremely frustrating!

that explains a lot, you didnt mention that critical part before. I upload a lot to FTP sites as well
originals fine.... but thru the server theyre corrupted, .....that narrows everything down. 😊

I am also having this same problem. I have had someone eles open up the file from my college page and then email it to me and it works just fine, but the downloading it from the website I get the folder with
"_rels"(folder), "[Content_Types].xml" (file?), "customxml" (folder), "docProps" (folder), and "word" (folder). Any help? :/

I am also having this annoying problem. I'm trying to open a downloaded docx file from an educational website but when I try to open it I get a message that the file is corrupt. Have tried opening in Word 2011, Pages, Preview, Illustrator, Textedit.
I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.8.5. The docx file was made using Word 2004-2007.

I presume youre doing this in Mac OS and not bootcamp, and that you have Microsoft Word (version?) installed?
This sounds like youre opening it in Firefox? Yes? Have you tried same in Safari.
Yes this is done on Mac OS and I have Microsoft Office 2011 installed. I have been using google chrome (I have also tried safari) and still unable to open the files....
still the same result, that pesky 'convert file from' window, even after converting to a .rtf file?!?
Microsoft Word Document. It all looks exactly the same as 'good' files, aka the ones I can actually open.
the d on document is lower case, not upper case if that makes any difference?
